Why would you see him differently? Derren Brown is gay, I see him as being a great performer, Stephen Fry is gay, he's one of the funniest and best actors I've ever seen, Clive Barker is gay, he's one of my favourite authors. As far as I know Ridley Scott is not gay, but is one of my favourite film directors, the author Robin Hobb is not gay, she's my absolute favourite author... and so on. I rarely consider a persons sexuality. What if you'd never seen Randi and then you discovered he was say..black, or disabled, or female, or transgendered - would it matter then? Although, I have to say, I'm glad he's male, cos that beard does look great on him
I'm happy he's come out if it makes him feel good, but I personally don't feel any different about him now than if he had just announced he had eggs for breakfast - now, if he turned around and said he'd converted to Christianity...then I'd be seeing him differently!

Here is my Randi story. I had just done a psychic fair in Ottawa and had returned by train to Union Station in Toronto. I saw this little man scurrying about like a demented hen looking highly irritated.
I recognised him as Randi but wasn't 100 percent sure. He did not look in the mood for conversation but I tried anyway. I approached him and said, "Are you James Randi?" He glared at me in an irritated fashion and scurried away without answering. It was then my turn to get irritated so I hurried after him and tried again more forcefully saying "You didn't answer me. Are You James Randi the magician?" He then glared at me with great malevolence spitting out the words, "Yes. I AM James Randi!"

He did not appear to be in a good mood. I said, "The last time I saw you was in this city and you were wandering down Yonge St. It was thirty years ago. You were here for Harry Smith's funeral" (Harry was a magic shop owner who mentored Randi in his younger days) He snorted, "Who are you? Are you a magician?" I answered, "Actually I am a psychic. I have just come back from exhibiting at a psychic fair in Ottawa" At that he brightened up immensely and it seemed to put him in a better mood. He whispered conspiratorially, "Shh! We cannot be seen together!" I told him that I thought he looked a bit agitated and he explained to me that the person who was supposed to pick him up hadn't shown up. He said he was in town for filming purposes. I think he was hinting to me to drop him off somewhere but I didn't have a car.

I then left him to his own devices and went to a phone to call a friend of mine who is active in magic. I told her that I had just been speaking to Randi at Union Station but she didn't believe me and told me to stop making up stories because she wasn't in the mood for it. I then said "In that case I'll prove it to you" I had just seen Randi a few yards away from the pay phone so I called out to him asking him to come over. He looked as if I were the last person on earth he wanted to talk to again but he did indeed come over. I said, "I have a big fan of yours on the phone" Of course I was lying since she isn't a particular fan at all but he grumpily took the phone from me and spoke to her. She still thought it was a prank but when it dawned on her that it was indeed James Randi she was speaking to she got all excited and asked for his autograph. He then got grumpy again and asked how the hell he was supposed to give her his autograph when she was on the other end of the phone. It did seem a logical question I suppose.

Anyway he gave me her autograph to give to her and he told her "This friend of yours sees me every time I come to Toronto" referring to the fact that I had seen him about 30 years before. He then bade her goodbye, hung up the phone and went on his way.


And that is the last I saw of him. He struck me as quite a character. I am kind of pleased I bumped into him like that since it was the only time I ever really spoke to him.

Now here's an odd thing. I'm bisexual, make no attempt at hiding it, will often play on it, but nevertheless resent you asking that question. I'm not sure if I am right or wrong to resent it; just saying is all.

I can almost certainly say that statistically the answer will be 'yes' :p

I wonder why it really matters. I've never understood why people feel the need to 'come out'. Just be yourself and be confident and comfortable with who you are.

I'm straight but I get mistaken for being gay all the time. I don't know why really; I suspect that like Chandler in Friends I have a certain "quality". I've often thought my life would have been easier if I had been gay. Perhaps I am gay and just don't know it yet. Who knows. Sexuality is such an odd thing.

When Derren came out, the thought did amuse me highly of a thousand wannabe Derrens standing in front of the mirror in their bathroom, one hand stroking their bum-fluff goatees, the other clutching a copy of NLP for Dummies, desperately trying to convince themselves that they too might be gay. Then shuffling off to their bedroom with this week's copy of Nuts (discretely hidden within said NLP tome).

I know what you mean old buddy old pal...I get the same thing, most of my gay friends swear Im a gay man trapped in a straight mans body...I can see their logic although doing dance and ballet for 15 years might work against me!!!

By the way,, i trained with the Ballet Rambert.. not a lot of people know that.. or believe it, but its absolutly true.
when i was at school, we had the oportunity to spend a week with them, so i did.
Facinating stuff.
