The Muscle Pass

Postby Leemason » Apr 14th, '10, 15:59

Hi Guys just wondering if anyone can give me any tips for The Muscle Pass?

I am trying to train my hand and doing it to the point where my hand is red raw and just want feedback on how long it can take to condition the muscle so I can prepare myself for the long road ahead of blood and Sweat.

This is an amazing trick and hope all the time and effor pays off as my hand is killing me at the moment and can only get it to jump a couple of inches which is deflating as I have been trying this for over a week now and getting no where. Any tips would be appreciated.

Take it easy

It really depends on the individual, and if you are doing it correctly. When I first learned I went through the same thing. Once my hand was raw and red I stopped until it settled down completely, then tried again and bingo it worked.

It is not just about developing the muscle in the hand, its also about learning the knack.

I learnt with a Poker Chip, this made it easier for me but might not work for everyone.

Start off doing the muscle pass across rarther than up. I think it took me about 6 months to get it right! Make sure you are keeping your hand as still as you can when you do the move otherwise it will just look like you are throwing the coin.

I'd also suggest only practising every other day, or at least giving your hand a decent rest between practise sessions. I found that a dead hand was no good when learning it!

Yeah, a red raw hand means you need to rest for a bit

Resting seems to help with learning sleight too, oddly. You'll fail to do it for hours, come back the next day and all of a sudden it's like second nature...

The Muscle Pass

Postby Leemason » Apr 15th, '10, 07:37

Cheers guys

Will give it a try.

Hope it doesn't take me 6 months and can appreciate this wont work overnight but I will do it for the love of the effect and magic.

I googled other thoughts and people say you can damage your hand muscle from it. Is that true or just nonsense?

Im a guitarist in a band and dont want that happening if thats the case.

The main thing to think about is to make your practice sessions structured. Hammering away at it for months will damage your hand. I know this from experience.

I learned the move in 94, before it was widely known. Being young and stupid I worked on it for four hours a day for three months before I showed anyone; by that time I had a twelve inch vertical rise. With time came experience, and I realised that fifty attempts five times a day would have been a better system.

You are looking at around four to six months to get any decent result - without any lower hand movement and at least twelve inches of travel. I really do believe that if you have less than that you are not doing the move justice.

Take care, Ian

Ive been doing the muscle pass for about 4 years now - I can get roughly a foot vertically, but im still not where I want it to be yet.

I learnt the move with a half dollar, and now I use a chinese coin which is slightly larger in diameter. I now wish I had leant it with english currency from the start, but I am now working on it with a 50p.

The best way to practice the move is horizontally, as previously pointed out. I find that if you can get about 18" horizontal, then you can get about 12" vertical (I irealise this is full of innuendo bingo potential).

To learn the move, I have used Ian Kendalls Virtual Sessions, and The Muscle Pass by Jay Noblezada.

Hope this helps

Mark

Ian showed me this in Blackpool and he does the move as good if not better as anyone I have seen, I would listen to him and learn via his method.

He did a coin routine and inspired me to use this move more.

(it was on the RSVP stand Ian when Russ asked you to show me )

It's worth keeping up the practice. :)

One thing I feel compelled to say though is.......

It's not a trick.

Its a move, or it's a flourish, and as such should be incorporated with other elements to make it a trick. :)

Just standing there making a coin jump around is amazing to watch, but it's about as mysterious as synchronized swimming.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

I did spend a couple of hours trying to master this with a 2p coin some years back. I decided I didn't much like doing magic that hurts tho.
