Card magic book recommendations

Postby gony » Apr 20th, '05, 16:40

Hi,

I have recently started reading the RRTCM and as it is so old I was wondering if anyone could recommend a more modern card book teaching all the sleights detailed in the Royal but including more recent ones. For routines I would be looking for tricks like the two monte, ambitious card type stuff.

I find RRTCM fine - just wanted to check that if I am spending my time wisely.

Cheers,

If you want a DVD (and you may not, this is just an idea), may I recommend Oz's Born To Perform. It contains several useful sleights including the Erdnase Color Change and the Classic Pass.

It also, and this is what made me think of it, contains 4 full-length routines:

Oz's Ambitious Card
Two Card Monte style trick (sort of)
Biddle Trick
Ultimate Transpo

I do use this DVD a lot and it's the main thing that got me started on card magic...so it comes with high recommendations :).

Roberto Giobbi's Card College series is excellent - but costly. He goes through sleights very well and there are also effects in there. Less costly ideas would be Erdnase - Expert at the Card Table or Marlo - Revolutionary Card Technique. They are republication of some old classics. I have them in my collection and use them as a reference source, rather than regularly as I do with the CC series.

HTH - no doubt others will offer their opinions too.

The RRTCC was the first card magic book I bought and apart from Erdnase's - Expert at the card table or even Anotated Erdnase I know of no other books that detail the jog shuffle so well......Paul Gordon claims to have taken all his writings on the jog shuffle from Erdnase but I find the RRTCC details it just fine and it has two chapters on this subject! Learn the jog and you will baffle both lay people and magicians too.

There is a lot of great stuff in the RRTCC, forget the patter it belongs in the dark ages but the magic is sound! I still do... Now You See It Now You Don't, whenever I get the opportunity (I have of course, adapted it to my style) but its a killer for lay people.

Other than that, stick with it and when you are ready to move on, as it's already been said there are a lot of other great books out there!

Card College has been mentioned, anything by Jerry Sadowitz, Roy Walton, Marlo, Bill Simon, Edward Brown, Dia Vernon, Simon Lovell, Le Paul, Bro John Hamman, Paul Harris, Peter Duffie, Cy Enfield, Ken Krenzel, John Bannon....I could go on and on but you get the idea! :)

Thanks for all the replies. I have ordered Oz's DVD and I will stick with RRTCM for the time being.
