Accurate Drawing of 221B Baker Street

Postby Tomo » May 6th, '10, 12:18

Someone has painstakingly worked through the entire Sherlock Holmes for details of his rooms, and has produced this stunning piece of work: http://www.stutler.cc/other/misc/baker_street.html

Nice. An almost Holmesian obsession to detail there.

(Is Holmesian a real word? If not, then I want full credit and royalties for it's invention)

It's a real word, coined in 1929 by Monsignor Ronald Knox, who wrote Studies in the Literature of Sherlock Holmes, the first book to treat the Sherlock Holmes stories in a mock-scholarly style.

"Holmesian" can relate to Sherlock Holmes himself, or to the pastime of pretending the stories are real and treating them in this mock-scholarly way. I was myself a fairly hardcore Holmesian for several decades, and only gave it up about ten years ago.

I do know that there are three types of jazz. There's cool jazz, there's hot jazz, and there's what-time-does-the-tune-start jazz.

Oh, and then there's Bix Beiderbecke, but he's, well, he's a genius!

I am just getting into it. I have more important things to be doing, but getting absorbed in Holmes still seems to take priority. Meh.. life is for living not for exams.

It's a fun hobby and I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it. Definitely worth joining the Sherlock Holmes Society of London, especially if you're in a position to attend the meetings and go on excursions.
