You are quite right. Relax. And that should come from repeated practice of what you are doing.
I practice until I've gone through every way an effect can go wrong (in front of a mirror) and then because most of my performing is in pubs when I've had a drink I also practice at home when I've had a drink till I know that I can do the effect drunk or sober
I'm a snooker fan, and right now I'm glued to the TV for 2 weeks of snooker (the World championships) and I sit in front of the TV doing sleights. Its the only way to be good at what you want to do.
