There certainly something wrong.

There is SO MUCH wrong with this I'm having trouble processing it all.

Although to answer your question; no, he wasn't being sarcastic. Do it.
If you have come up with a new method then you're on to some cash; it's all about the method afterall.

nope - i wasnt being sarcastic...John's a walking encyclopedia of Q&A techniques, and a nice guy...send him an email with your method and sooner or later (he is rather busy) you'll get a reply...

Hi all, first timer! Been reading this thread with great interests, and there is another similarly long thread on the same topic - Rita, are you on that one as well? :D

http://wongablog.co.uk/2007/05/02/derre ... ment-68897

The last post on that thread was mine - levels of tolerance to spoilers obviously differ across forums so I m not going to post it out here. But please if anyone could shed some lights on my questions it would be great!

Many thanks guys, keep up the magic!

If we answered those questions it would be considered exposure and Derren has specifically asked that such discussions don't take place. We don't mind risking soem general comments and rhetorical questions but, even if we knew exactly how it was all done, we woudln't reveal the secrets.

Sorry that was not my intent - i understand and respect the magician's oath. I v'e come to realise that what I have said on the other thread may be only suitable to that thread - which was meant for ppl, often lay men, who have been to the show, to share their experience and amazement, and try to take a few sneaky peeks into the wonderful world of magic. My question tho, are simply as follows:

Has anybody seen what happened to the envelope after it has been taken from my hand? I want to know because as a participant, I missed out on a detail in a routine which was otherwise visible to the audience. and --

Is it of any significance to the reveal?

Both are yes/no answers, and since there are mentions of the Berglas effect or the Encyclopedia hopefully these questions are not inappropriate.

Now the link in my previous post may not be entirely appropriate - if anybody (esp. the admin) objects plz pm me and I ll take it off.

Again, thanks guys, always loved magic and always will!

No worries, you mentioned that things may be different compared to elsewhere so we were just confirming that. To be honest, whilst many of us could replciate a lot of Derren's stuff, there's no guarantee that we'd use the same method... frustrating or what :D ?!

Saw Enigma again last night and was amazed at the number of differences in a year's time.

The "white handbag" was one, but he clearly stated to the girl "just stay by the stairs for a moment while we put a mike on you", so there was nothing mysterious about it. I think the chalk scratching was audible before (maybe not so loud?), so the miking up might have been just a plausibility device, but it worked well.

The seeing-through-foil routine was streamlined to just two feats, the die and the watch. There were previously cards as well. It plays much better this way, since a card was already used anyway in the introduction, and the routine is plenty long enough with two items.

The biggest change was in the finale, which has an entirely different dressing. Looking at it objectively, in terms of the working, it's definitely slicker and smoother in its new style. It avoids the slight nastiness of making one chap stand aside like a lemon throughout the long routine, and also gets around any possibility of "public acclaim" not providing the right answer.

On the other hand, I did miss the "Berglasian Personality Profiles" and all the psychological trimmings. Especially given Derren's persona, the claim "it's impossible for a human to make a truly random decision" is better when he can go on to baffle us all with psycho-verbiage.

(I think all of the above is vague enough that it can't count as giving away any secrets. If the mods disagree, please alter.)

It was a shame that the man himself couldn't spend more than a few minutes at the stage door before being whisked away. I'm not entirely sure whether he really did have to rush off somewhere, or whether this was a polite way to duck the more swivel-eyed fans, who seemed to be out in force last night. I was standing next to a couple of them. They scared me, and they weren't even aimed at me.

Robbie, don't worry, you didn't give anything away.

I haven't seen it yet, and I couldn't tell anything from your description - though I'm guessing there might be some sort of x-ray eyes thing, which suprises me.

I was very lucky to have been finally able to see it tonight, and it was by far his best show. Derren knew exactly when to be funny and he was amazing at the ability to bring it down to a couple of emotional routines.

The long routine just before the interval was just beautiful and just goes to show how much the magic is the experience and not the trick itself (which played a tiny part in the overall routine)

Brilliant stuff, I'm so glad I got to go :)

But what a treasure trove to choose from, eh? :D

What is the name of this book and is it Marvin or David Berglas? I see they both write magic/mentalism books...

Yup, that one. There were only 1000 copies sold and it has now become something of a collectors item.

I don't think it's been mentioned anywhere else, but Enigma will be shown on C4 this Thursday (6th Jan). If anyone hasn't seen it live, it really is something you should watch
