I know of the theory that having a large moon was important in getting life on Earth to evolve quickly, because it creates large tides, but I don't know anything about the details.
I've always thought that having such a large and eye-catching moon was the main reason astronomy started so early in human history. Without the Moon to attract attention, people would probably not have bothered much about the night sky.
In occult terms, the Sun and Moon are the two most important symbols, the male/father principle and the female/mother principle, which are opposite but equal. It's necessary for creatures at the human stage of development to be exposed to striking and equal embodiments of these principles. So... here we are, at a place and time where that's exactly what we've got. Hmm.
