Ok update on the rope I bought at 40p/metre, 7mm, white (well sort of).

Well a big disapointment: the rope is not as smooth as I would have thought and definitely not "white" - it is also a bit thin in my opinion. I'll try the bleech trick overnight...

Ah well, it was intented to be a training rope but it will surely stay that way !

I'll let you know about the bleech.

the off-white or natural rope you have takes colour pretty well so you could always dye it with fabrick dye or food colouring (very expensive if you used food colouring on a whole rope).
handy if you need erm part of the rope a diferent colour for practising a trick

Rope for performances should be seen as a disposable item, particularly if you're being paid. I typically perform a few tricks with a piece which will involve a cut and restored and then give the rope away and move onto the next.

Personally, (and it's only my view) it's not worth the bother of bleaching and washing. You'll be asking next what temperature the iron needs to be set at :?

I think that goes for any magic on ebay, buyer beware, what's the latin for that again?

Magic books might be a different story (no pun intended)

I am not sure I heard the Ferengy say it ....And I am a bit of a Trekky! :) But didn't Lovejoy say it quite often on that antique show that used to be on Telly! Or am I showing my age!

Just had a swift Google (they can't touch you for it as long as you keep one foot on the floor at all times) and found:

Caveat Emptor
Latin for "Let the buyer beware." The idea that buyers take responsibility for the condition of the items they purchase and should examine them before purchase. This is especially true for items that are not covered under a strict warranty.

Well I must admit I was blinded by the price and the fact that I already got some good deals there (ie books) but i did expect that...

I'd like to thank you all for your advice and especially dat8962 for his help. Look forward to meeting you if I go to Bournemouth sometime and you are free.
