Saw this yesterday, and on the whole I have to say I'm pretty pleased with the whole affair. The plot (such as it was) has been reconstructed somewat, which was inevitable given the rambling nature of the book and the need for a film to be self contained. However, there is p0lenty in there to keep the purists happy, some good new jokes + new explorations (e.g of the Vogon psyche) of which I am sure Douglas would not only have approved, but would have been proud of. The whole is certainly not over-Hollywoodised and in fact feels very British. Superb casting all round in my view (and an explanation included for Ford's non-Guildford accent). The "love interest" business is a bit mushy, but actually keeps the story moving and allows exploration of Zaphod's superficiality. All set up at the end to continue the story, and as it's topping the US boxx office charts there's every chance.
Shame Douglas isn't around to see it. I'm sure there'll be some whingers, but I am certainly not one of them.
And as was said, Doctor Who back on form as well.
