Haven't posted for a while, but thought I'd make an update on how I'm coming along.

One of my Scouts asked me to do some close up for her 16th birthday party, so I went around the tables and did a few simple tricks.

Went very well, saw what went down well and what didn't and how I can improve in future. What I have learnt:

1. My patter and misdirection need a tiny bit of work
2. It looks suspicious doing some tricks with a blue deck and then pulling out a red one to do a rising card.
3. Props definitely need to be ditched/examinable afterwoulds.
4. Some tricks go down better than others.

Between tricks had some good chats about different styles of magic and magicians.

Hi Big John,

I quite agree with you on ditching a blue deck and swapping it for a red deck is not really a good idea,so at least youve learned one thing.
Keep up the good work though and im sure with more gigs,you will get more experience,and know what effects go down well with certain age groups,or types of people.

And its quite often the simplest tricks that get the best reaction. Thats quite a bummer when you have spent hours learning a knuckle busting sleight!

Good stuff.

The best way to perfect your act is go out and perform.

One thing, I used to use a rising card deck until I re-read RRTC. Now I use the version described towards to start of the book. This removes the need to change decks.

There's a couple of workarounds for this. The most obvious is to have all your gaffed decks in the same colour
OR
Have a reason for producing a second deck, for example a need for a spec to hold on to/keep the blue deck while you're performing rising card.

Some very good points there, and I'll be looking through that thread thoroughly. Question though, if someone does ask to see something that's gimmicked, what's the best way to get out of that situation?

Some very good points there, and I'll be looking through that thread thoroughly. Question though, if someone does ask to see something that's gimmicked, what's the best way to get out of that situation?

I dont use many gimmicks/ gaffs, but I make sure I have every gimmick in both red and blue, because I cant afford to buy bricks and just use the red decks, every deck is fair game, it also means nothing looks dodgy when you switch

agree with that i'd normally say:

"Wait, let me show THIS then have a look" (Then switch to an effect without gimmicks, perhaps a card change in hand or somthing)

I quite like that. When I simply said "no" last night it looked very desperate as I shoved them into my pocket!

Give it a try next time you perform. its always really handy to pick up on things you may have done good/bad, so well done.
