copperfield on AGT

Postby daleshrimpton » Sep 16th, '10, 08:56

The man himself, was special guest on this years finale of AGT....We get to see it next year.

But as a treat..... here is his performance, which opens with an Ilusion he did years ago, on the canyon show.. and it's looking better than ever.
As is he.
he has Completely lost that cheesy thing. Clearly he's in a happy place now, and looks relaxed on stage..

Going to see him in Vegas next year!

I will be avoiding Mr Angel though, despite probably staying in the Luxor.

Great performance,
It's a shame to see that there are still people discussing the methods in the comments underneath. :(

Also,
I know AGT is a much bigger show that BGT, but I do wish we could get some quality magic on BGT - there seems to be a curse against magicians doing well there.

There isn't a curse, its just the judges generally don't like them.

A Swedish CLOSE-UP magician won the final in Sweden, and other magicians have reached the finals in other countries. However there I've met magicians who do great cups and balls, or great Chop Cup routines, and they go on and perform well, but get dismissed immediately.

"We want to see elephants dissappear" - Simon Cowl

...then give them more than 90 seconds.

Its worth noting that Chriss Angel was on AGT the other day, and his performance was very lackluster. He would deffinetly not have won if he had been a contestant, and its debatably whether he even would have got through to the semi-final/finals.

I don't think even your beloved Derren Brown would get through the audition process, the judges just get bored very easily & want to see either huge street dance/acrobatic routines or singers. I'd love a fantastic magic/mentalism act to do well but i'd put £50 on it never happening in Britain.

Copperfield looks well though, glad he's ditched the big hair, raised eyebrow & blouse look.

I'd love to apply just to see how unfairly they are treated, the time limit is the biggest problem I think, that and the fact the judges are only interested in creating an X-factor / Dance variation.

I'd perform a 90 second Banachek bullet catch if I were to try anything. Mentalism, no matter how good, would never work.

I think an impressive bullet catch would wow the judges enough; and YES there are ways to get around the gun laws, as Penn and Teller proved a few times.

I have a few routines & ideas that would work, but like Tom says, difficult to do any Mentalism related effects in 90 seconds, no time for a premise or to create atmosphere. After qualifiying though, I don't think theres a time limit is there?

and... you get through, so... what's next?

you have to enter these things under the asumption that you are going to get right through to the finals.most Magic acts dont seem to realise this.
which is why they get through week one, but falter week 2,or 3.. they run out of ideas, and imapct value drops as a result.

I have at home, a secret note book. inside this book, are a number of brand new Ilusions. All of them would have to be built.. assistants hired, and costumes made if i were to ever think of going for BGT.. in the off chance that i got through to week one.
Investment on that scale in these difficult times, just isnt practical... because venues are not around in which to perform them . and the cost of touring is crazy.

( by the way.. this is off topic yet again!!) start a new thread on this.

I remember starting a thread on the cafe about what magicians would perform for each of the three rounds. The results were quite interesting.

I'm not sure of the rules about time constraints or equipment used. But if I had the money I'd perform my own version of Death Saw in the second round. Its never gone beyond blueprint designs, but I'm pretty sure it could work.

Out of interest guys, what three effects would you all perform?

Tom
