Last night in my show at the Clifftown Theatre in Southend, I used the Benedict Box.
This what the audience experienced.
In a series of routines about journeys, I introduce the idea of what one needs to travel and explain that fundamentally, we need a credit card, some cash, a mobile phone, and a passport. Images for each of these are projected on a large screen behind me.
I walk into the audience with the box, remove the lid and distribute pencils and differently coloured slips of paper to about 15-18 people. Those with blue slips write down four digits from their credit card, those with green slips write down four digits from their mobile phone, and those with yellow slips write down four digits from the serial number on a note. The slips are collected in the box, the lid is placed on top, and the whole box is given to a participant who is then asked to join me on stage.
She brings the box on stage, takes the lid off, and dumps the contents of the box onto the table. She then selects one slip of each colour and tells me the number on each. These are added and the total is a very large number that happens to be my birthdate, which has been in plain view on the scan of my passport projected behind me the whole time. In the context of the previous routines and narrative, this creates a nice finish and complements theings from the first set.
The handling of the box is very fair and in my view fairer than other boxes I have used. The finish fits my set perefectly.
Best wishes
