Card effect in 13 Steps trouble

Postby Edantes » Nov 12th, '10, 18:27

Well, I delved back into my Corinda the other day and found an effect called "photo-memory" (page 308) that had slipped by me. Its not that exciting an effect but I tried it and the method presented in the book didn't seem to work. Am I just being thick and missing something?

Its a spectacular effect. Personally, I count them off normally and then before dealing the final card onto that growing packet, I lateral palm the bottom card from the bottom to the top so that when the final card is placed on the top it is beneath it- prepared for a DL.

With this I always noticed a discrepancy with the effect described and the method- the method is for naming the card at any given number in the deck, the effect is described as the other way around if I remember correctly.

But the method in Corinda works fantastically, if not slightly arkward about how you count the cards off- but I have performed is straight out of the book, in front of people who know what a DL or top change (depending on circumstances) is- but were still fooled, as a perfect example of simple mentalism with a clear, memorable effect. Its one of my favourites from the card section.

You could also present it so that you name the card and you 'subconciously teach' the spectator to learn the deck unconciously and they name the number which first appeals to them when you name a card- and voila, THEY have done the effect. I always perform this presentation now- and it has to be one of my favourite card effects.

Its not quite right in the book by the look of it.

in the description of the effect, it states that you have the spectator name a card, but in the description of the method, they name a number.. and you the performer name the card.
try this...
spread the cards. memorise the deck, close the deck, and place it behind your back.have them name a number, and you name the card.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

My copy has a comment in "Errata" at the back of the book, just before the index.

Thanks to both of you, and I'm so sorry for what Im about to say, but I've done the silly thing of putting the wrong effect in my post :P I meant to ask about an effect called Two Minds - a Single Thought (page 314)

Sorry, I've no idea why I wrote about Photo-memory.

This is the Smith-Myth principle referred to on p.302 of MMM. There's also an effect in "Paul Daniels Adult Magic" - "Half-Cut Coincidence" - which works the same way. The instructions in that book may be clearer.
