Hi gnoff, welcome to Talk Magic

. First of all let me say that there is no need to worry about learning magic "backwards". Everybody has to start somewhere and the King Rising is a very cool place to start. I doubt there has ever been a magician who has started their magic career by sitting down and learning sleight of hand. Everybody in this game has started by being inspired by something and then moving on from there. It's true that you will have to deal with some sleight of hand at some point but that all depends on where you want to go with your magic and what you want to achieve.
As for the TT, don't worry about skin tone. The famous "magician's magician", Daryl, once performed a TT routine with a flourecent TT. Nobody picked up on it until he revealed it. He did that to illustrate a point; the TT is not a prop that is meant to be seen. It is a utility device which allows you to perform amazing things but when it comes down to it, its just a fake bit of plastic and
not a substitue for the real thing.
I suggest that you get hold of some sort of TT instructional material. There's loads of booklets, books and even DVDs which are dedicated to this fantastic prop. Gary Darwin has recently published a 3 disc DVD set called
Darwin's Encyclopedia of TT Magicwhich can be found
here. There's also plently of cheaper booklets out there such as 101 TT Tricks, also by Gary Darwin. These are great sources of TT knowledge and should set you in good stead. Good luck
