Two options for you here:
1) Use a date function watch. I do. Nobody has ever called on the change of date and if they did even notice it? They've just been winding the watch... that's likely to happen anyway isn't it? (I think that's a point Looch made).
2) Don't use the long stem, use a regular watch.... it takes a little more balls and a little bit of extra 'acting' (you should realise what I mean by this, PM me if you don't) but it's fine. When selecting a particpant for any watch routine of this nature I don't mention someone having a watch. They can either use theirs (if they have one), mine or anyone's from the audience.
I've found that if they don't have a watch, perhaps 70% are happy to use mine and the other 30% use a friends, of these most don't have dates (I perform mostly for women who's watches seem to have a date function less than mens).
