Magic Items in Hand Luggage on Planes

Postby Rufio » Jul 6th, '11, 13:50

Hi was just looking at a list of prohibited items, which, whilst not exhaustive, contains obvious ones like dangerous items, bladed articles, etc.

However, there isn't explicit reference to items like it, but would anyone know if Coinvexed, a PK Sharpie and a shimmed playing card would be ok to put in hand luggage on a plane?

Specifically flying with easyjet as other airlines prohibit "magnetised materials" of which a shimmed card, whilst relatively weak, would fall under, although easyjet would seem to be ok.

Well, I'm not to sure if it's really the airlines that deal with the prohibited items in the end. It's the airports own x-ray machines that you go through. I would have thought that the prohibited items are set by some kind of air travel guidlines rather than the individual airlines. Maybe the best thing to do is look down that route and maybe try and contact the airport that you'll be flying from. I'm sure it'll be ok though, a small, weak magnet on a gimmick is probably less of a security risk than a laptop or mobile phone, or something like that.

Cool beans, thanks for that, though on reflection I'll just stick to a shimmed card, rather than other more substantial stuff.

Do you have to carry the goodies on your person? The rules are much more relaxed for items in checked baggage. Basically, as long as it's not likely to catch fire or explode, it's probably OK.

Very dangerous (or dangerous-seeming) items may have to be checked in separately to fly under the pilot's personal supervision. Colin had to do this with some large hunting knives and an air pistol. There's no problem with such items, just a little extra paperwork and you have to pick them up separately. Or in our case, they were delivered by courier the next day.

It was so different years ago. I was flying to Kos in Greece for a series of shows, and I phoned the airline and told them what I wanted to bring. They told me some of those items were a bit dangerous for the hold, so I would have to bring them on as hand luggage.

I flew with a set of throwing knives, two boxes of pyro flashes, a dart gun and a pellet gun in my hand luggage. Those were the days.

Three years ago I was stopped for a small plastic yellow water pistol. It wasn't even loaded.

Considering all the restrictions in force, I'm amazed that ballpoint pens and pencils are allowed in hand luggage - think how much damage someone could do with a nice, sharp pointy weapon like a brand new pencil......

An old aikido teacher of mine used to fly with his custom made combat walking stick. Nobody would even think about taking it off him, because he's just an old man with a walking stick, but he could do some serious damage with it if he wanted to...

I wouldn't want to personally try it, but wouldn't it be interesting to see how much you could smuggle onboard a plane, utilizing the magical techniques we've aquired. I'm sure it's possible.
