Hehehe. I can understand it working though. So much better than the travelling guitarist or the guitarist at a party. He would always be sappy like "oh, I'm not very good. Play? Okay. Ummmm... so this is a song I wrote about self-harming which a close friend has problems with" and off he'd go. YET IT WOULD WORK!! Whereas magic - that's proper fun!

Me - I learned the piano. So maybe I'm just bitter as they are always difficult to carry around or contrive a way for people to make their way to a room with a piano. Plus few girls are impressed by a guy who can play 'Manic Monday' by The Bangles on the piano.

Actually I was that traveling guitarist too, although I played more upbeat and crowd pleasing music. But a pack of cards is easier in a bar setting by far.

If me it was watching Paul Daniels that got me started. I was given a Paul Daniels Magic set for Christmas one year and it all went from there. I lost interest when I was about 13 but started up again when I was about 20 after performing as magician's assistant resparked my interest.

You don't even have to be that good at it, it's quite scary how little it takes...

I personally first got in to magic at about 5 years of age when I visited my local town's annual festival and came across a magic stall where I bought the seemingly impossible trick of objects appearing inside an 'empty' box - I was only 5!

I've been slipping in and out of the magic scene, got more involved again at the age of 12-13, then due to my sporting errands being quite serious in the semi-professional sort of way, I completely lost my interest for magic.

I don't know how but about a month ago I came across something which reminded me of magic; I've been re-hooked since! Being 16 and just having completed my GCSE's I have ample opportunities and vast amounts of time to practice my magic and take it seriously and I'm loving every minute of it.

Way back in the late sixty's or very early 70's I used to go and visit my nan's who lived on the Kingsway in London. About 4 doors away was a magic shop where I used to spend Saturday mornings.
I have not got a clue what it was called, if anyone does remember it I would love to know. Nowdays I normally end up in Davenports.

I've always loved magic and would watched any magic TV special and fondly recall the old Penn & Teller shows, Paul Zenon's show and Derren Brown (though I had to import the DVDs) and whilst I knew a very small amount of card tricks, they were sleight-free. I never really knew where to start. There was no magician uncle or family friend and when ever I tried to find out, I had little luck.

Then when the Penn & Tell Fool Us pilot was on, something snapped and I thought "right, time to learn. Now where to start?". I did a bit of googling, found this forum and was blown away by all the information and helpful tips on getting started.

I'm not working at the moment so I'm being a little obsessive and skittish with all the information out there. I'm finding it hard to focus on one area. Essentially, I'm like a child wanting to know everything now!

I come from a closed eye neo-pagan, high magic(k) grimoire studying background and though I'd watched and enjoyed stage magic all my life couldn't see myself ever learning to perform it.

Then I taught myself lock picking as research for an unpublished novel, picking up a couple of sleight of hand books along the way and also bought RRTCM. Over the next decade I had several abortive attempts to work through the book before deciding finally make a go of it.
