Post from America to UK

Postby jomarchan » Sep 8th, '11, 12:46

Hi
Does anybody remember how long the post takes to arrive from America to the UK? I have ordered something from Outlaw and although I have ordered before, I can't remember how long it took, although I am sure it took just over a week. Rick is normally fantastic and he did tell me he would ship it last week so I was perhaps hoping it will arrive by the end of this week in time for the weekend.

Thanks.

I've had stuff take up to two weeks, (not from Outlaw) but normally it's much quicker.

Just over a week sounds about right. It takes that long for me to receive things from the States, and it takes the same time for things I post here to reach there.

I've never bought from Outlaw so I cannot say anything about Rick's customer service based on my own experience. There are threads like this all over the place with good and bad stories. What I take from it is that he can be rather inconsistent.

Ok thanks for that. I have never had a problem with outlaw but I just would have liked it before this weekend. Should have ordered sooner I suppose. An Item I ordered through Laflin Magic arrived within a week which really was quicker than I was expecting.
Thanks again.

There are three main factors:

1. When it was posted.
2. How it was sent. As far as I can tell, there are two main types of post from the US (not including couriers). One takes about a week, one approximately a fortnight. Or maybe it's the same type of post and blind chance rules! There are some really slow options, I think, but I've never been unfortunate enough to order from someone who uses them.
3. Whether HMRC pull the parcel out of the UK delivery system and charge duty on it. This seems to add another couple of weeks to the process.

Normal US delivery: 7-14 days

Outlaw: 2-12 months

I had a similar experience ordering from Outlaw that Freddie seems to have had. Admittedly it was sent over the xmas period however I had to wait over 2 months for a delivery but items ordered from Penguin (don't ask) at the same time arrived between xmas and New Year.

A little tip, and I hate to say it, but try to go with UPS or some other service. The US post master general announced the other day that the postal service will probably run out of money by 2013 and is taking steps to try to avoid that happening, such as stopping Saturday deliveries and closing a few thousand postal outlets. In the meantime the union contract is about up and the employees are not bowing down to anything. They would rather keep making ungodly amounts of money, work fewer hours, (but still make the money) and have shorter routes, (yet make more money). In other words they are going to put themselves out of work.

While they say 7 to 14 business days, I'd give them a little longer before but I am sure you will get it.

From Canada to the UK is fantastic. Probably three days for a letter. A parcel slightly longer I suppose but no more than a week. To get mail from America to Canada which is only next door it takes for bloody ever. Fast the other way though.

If you want something from outlaw order a good three months in advance for small effects and a year for larger effects.

Thanks for all the advice. He did email me to say it would be shipped the next day so you never know, I could still get it this week although we are running out of days.....
Thanks again

Airmail letters take about a week. Small parcels via airmail usually take longer, presumably because customs takes more interest in them. Surface mail takes at least a month, often more.

My orders from Outlaw have always arrived in good time. Maybe I've just been lucky.

To be Fair Robbie, mine have as well. I am just panicking as I needed it this weekend. I accept that I should have placed the order in good time but you know how it is. My only grudge with Outlaw is that he doesn't reply to emails as quick as I would like, if at all. Can't fault Rick other than that. So far.........

Can take a real long time, which is a shame as there's a few things I've wanted to purchase but cannot find in the UK, old or obscure books for example. The idea of shipping to UK puts me off a little bit, especially because it usually means the cost of what I wanted goes up by around a third.

Also, be aware that sometimes you have to randomly pay some extra fee to receive the item.
