Surely this is some kind of discrimination by the prison service against us normal folk??

Normal? Now I know this is just one big joke ;) :)

I'm going to ignor all the nonsense that's been written and just answer the oiriginal post. There's alot of cronyism in magic and mentalism and a lot of sexist attitudes from people who think that women should be prancing around, wearing next to nothing. But there are also far more people who I've found have been nothing but amazingly supportive.

While I really don't think that there's anything at all wrong with the sexy, sassy presentation style but it's certainly not the only style that's open to us and you'll very rarely ever see me wearing anything provocative when I perform, I usually wear a nice evening dress.

I do though, think that you'll find that when you start doing gigs, the pubglic really don't have the same attitude towards girls in magic that some magicians seem to have. I've had people tell me that they think that it's novel to see a women magician but I've never come across anyone who's been negative towards me and it's never hindered me. In some ways it can really help us, I've performed at hen nights and for girly nights when I've been told that they were glad to find a female magician because they'd have felt uncomfortable with a man.

To the people who have say that women are limited in the roles and styles that they can play, it stick my tongue out at them :). I think that we can do and get away with far more than a man, we can bring in a certain elegance, charm and fun into our routines that men would find it hard to get away with. I'm mainly a mentalist now but I'm certainly not limited to acting the part of a fortune teller, my performance is bubbly and fun.

For the suggestions that we shold try to imitate the men, I totally disagree. We're the girls not men, our performances should reflect that. We can bring much more to the table than a little leg and boob. Be confidant in yourself, be entertaining and you can't go wrong.

Magic is an old fasioned subject. Most magic clubs I know of are firmly stuck in the 1950's in there socail attitudes. which is a shame. Even the larger and more sucessfull clubs fail (look at the MC last year in Blackpool). If magic is to survive as a vital force it needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into the new century. Hopfully more woman magicians will help to achieve this.

In my opinion I'd rather they just perform magic normally, rather than try to use their womanly 'assets'.

It dose not matter what other magicians would sooner do. It matters what entertains the audence.

Depends what you call normal ?

Women normally use their 'womanly' assets in all areas of life.... and of course boys will be boys. Would you like someone to suggest that you never make a flirty comments, or cheeky asides, during your magic performances and you should be performing normally rather than using any male traits.

The role we play as magicians can be an acted-out false role, or we can represent ourselves. We choose that role.
Other magicians may give critical appraisal of the role we choose, but there is no right or wrong role, no right or wrong personality, and gender is a complete irrelevance.

Discussions such as this whole thread have nothing to do with magic, they are to do with the stereotypes we have as a society as a whole.

Anybody for a mint?

Please forgive my off topic post here, but hey, the topic seems to have went out the window a long time ago, so I'm just going to post here from a personal interest.

jon_kent wrote:All the jobs ive done are very male orientated - ive been a personal trainer, a doorman (am still) and i was well on my way to being a pro mma fighter (UFC)

You're in the MMA game? My brother is a promoter and we used to train together before he moved away, you ever fought up north? What gym do you fight out of? Perhaps I know you or some of your team mates, that'd be a nice surprise on a magic forum.

Back on topic....

Stacy, personal opinion here but I don't think people care if a magician is a man or woman, just so long as they're entertaining. If girls want to "use their assets" then I think that's fine, if boys want to be a bit cheeky and say a cheesy line of "write your name, a smiley face and maybe a phone number just for me" then that's fine too, especially because they'll probably just get a groan and a pity laugh, but its entertainment.

If that's not for you then don't bother complaining about it, just don't do it, do your own style. Do whatever you like, and whatever makes you happy, because a happy performance is a good one and breeds laughs and smiles, and that's what it's about isn't it?
