Expanded 50p Shell

Postby Rufio » Sep 18th, '11, 19:36

I have scoured the internet, as well as used the Search function here, but unless it honestly isn't produced, can anyone please point me in the right direction (ideally the direct link) to where sells an expanded 50p shell?

It needs to be big enough to house a 2pence coin.

Finally, in terms of nomenclature, what exactly IS a slippery coin? Does it basically mean that it houses the coin inside, but when, say a Raven or other device attracts the shell it just means it comes off easily?

Oh, and the shell should be magnetic / shimmed or whatever, so that the shell is attracted but the coin below isn't. Surprisingly, non-magnetic 2ps are hard to come by.

If no luck with the 50p coin shell I may just use alternative (cheaper) coins instead.

I don't think there is such a thing as an expanded 50p. Maybe it is the shape which causes the problem. I know that on cheaper produced £2 coins there is a weakness with the centre bit of the coin. Stick to half dollars or you can get an expanded half crown from 'The Card Collection' I use these pre demical coins as they are big and heavy and have a nice milled edge for easier handling. They sell regular half crowns to match.

I'm pretty sure corindaman's right - I've never seen or heard of an Exp. 50p S***l.

It may well be possible to have a 50p lathed, to create a round recessed S***l, but then you'd not have enough space for a 2p coin, and would have to use a different denomination.

A slippery shell has part of the edge missing so it can be slid out at the tips of your fingers. For routines like 3 fly etc

There is available from International Magic a shell coin set for use with the Raven which includes a 50p shell. http://www.internationalmagic.com/acata ... -1586.html I don't know if an ordinary 2p would fit inside, you would need to check with them to be certain. I doubt if you could find an expanded 50p because the odd shape would make nesting difficult and possibly noisy.

There's some new 'cool' trick that has a signed coin travel from spec hand to an envelope or somewhere and it uses a hollowed out 50p with a 2 "inside" it and a magnet to remove the 50p. Probably derived from the raven kit idea posted above.

But talking of slippery, I saw some slippery half shell £2 recently, I think tango, but I cannot find them anywhere. Anyone know?

Thanks peeps. The 50p shell was in response to a marketed effect I recently purchased: I shan't say what it is, as that'd be exposure. But you can imagine my frustration when having practised the effect and visualising myself using it that night it had mysteriously disappeared: searching everywhere I realised it would probably appear, but decided to get a VERY reasonably priced 2p shell from eBay (£3.26!)

Ah, thanks, the slippery reference makes sense now. I guess for my requirements it should just be a normal shell. The 2p shell will work for my purposes: just a difference in the two coins used. The marketed routine is more involved than a mere transposition, and is certainly a routine that represents excellent value for money as well as being direct and well thought out, as well as relying on misdirection and sleight of hand that will make the routine a joy to perform, which is equally important as the reaction, as performing a move under someone's nose and pulling it off gives immense pleasure.

The above posts are right, I'd imagine the 50p shape would make it difficult, hence why in hindsight the supplied (now lost) gaff was custom made, which goes some way to dispelling my own perceptions that many effects simply rely on putting together existing available gaffs, admittedly packaged with great tuition and routining, but essentially, adopting that alchemist approach into creating something valuable out of the ordinary. Then again, I suppose that's what magic is about, and that sense of "if only I'd thought of that, of course!" you get as a magic consumer is often the value in marketed effects.
