There's an American phrase "jump the shark".
The Lottery trick was where Derren jumped the shark.

Laymen talked about it but I wouldn't say many were impressed by it.

I enjoyed it. Chris often seemed genuinely unaware of things that were happening/he was doing.

No offense to the guy, but when Derren described him as a 'blank slate' I really knew what he meant, the guy just seemed like there was not much going on inside! Likeable though, except I wouldn't want someone that would throw water (as deep down they'd know it would be) in my face just because someone told them to!

The Gameshow tonight - seeing how easily people will basically be twisted sonuva's to someone just because they had anonymity and were part of a crowd/mob. Really is just a large psychology experiment, which is fine, but would be nice to see Derren doing some illusions soon!

I just completed a Social Sciences module as part of the part-time Psychology degree I'm studying. No doubt they will mention about crowd mentality, bystander effect (Genovese syndrome) and just raise fundamental questions about the 'darkness' inside each of us, seeing as we are in actual fact just animals at the end of the day.

Jumping the shark is an idiom, first employed to describe a moment in the evolution of a television show when it begins a decline in quality that is beyond recovery.

In its initial usage, it referred to the point in a television program's history where it has "outlived its freshness" [1] where viewers feel "the writers have run out of ideas" and that "the series has [lost] what made it attractive."[2] These changes were often the result of efforts to revive interest in a show whose audience had begun to decline.[3]

The usage of "jump the shark" has subsequently broadened beyond television, indicating the moment in its evolution when a brand, design, or creative effort moves beyond the essential qualities that initially defined its success, beyond relevance or recovery.

The phrase jump the shark comes from a scene in the fifth season premiere episode of the American TV series Happy Days titled "Hollywood: Part 3," written by Fred Fox, Jr.[4], and aired on September 20, 1977. In the episode, the central characters visit Los Angeles, where a water-skiing Fonzie (Henry Winkler), wearing swim trunks and his leather jacket, jumps over a confined shark, answering a challenge to demonstrate his bravery. The series continued for nearly seven years after that, with a number of changes in cast and situations.

im finding it boring.
and " nothing is faked in the next 50 minutes..." means nothing in a 70 minute show, 5 minutes in. :)

I think it's less of a case of Derren jumping the shark and more of a case of him having had enough success on the tv that he can do his traditional mentalism in his stage shows and make tv shows doing things that would never ordinarily be commissioned. Instead of doing billet reading- he's getting the chance to replicate genuine psychological experiments on channel 4 on a Friday night and getting people who ordinarily would never watch anything like it, to be interested in the results.
