Another alternative is the disc repair service that a lot of video game shops offer. They use a rotary machine that polishes the scratches out, making the disc readable again.
I seem to remember my brothers used to polish scratched CDs with turtle wax when the CD player wouldn't play them any more. It seemed to work.
