i prefer card magic as its so versatile but everyone is different. I have tried coin magic and don't like it that much but i enjoy card magic so try both and see which you prefer. watch lots of videos of magic and find an effect you want to work towards if you dont like it do the same for the other one. Hope this helps :D

It is possible to perform just card magic to the paying public. Paul Gordon does this and i have done this in the past. If you get the right material it can and does work.

Fair play. In my opinion I prefer card magic too.

But then if you ever meet me ask to see my coin retention vanish!

Coin magic is better and anyone who says otherwise is wrong. Since this is the internet, my opinion is obviously a fact. Lalallalalaaalalalalala, I'm not listening... :)

Coin and cards are just objects.Since no one can ever claim to know all possible uses for them, it is impossible to say which is better.

I personally like mainly things with cards. Though I wouldn't say that one is better than the other. David Roth made a career out of being just near godly with coins. I have tried to learn coin magic and it just didn't mesh well with me, but I can see the entertainment value in it and also I can appreciate the amount of skill and style that some coin magic can take.

I do like cards a bit more because many coins that coin guys tend to use, are either no longer in circulation. But that is just my personal opinion.

It has very little to do with the genre of magic. It has to do with the performanc/style. Sure it is possible to do just cards, or just coins if you have the performing skills to pull it off. Most will end up just boring the spectator. But that same performer will probably bore the spectator no matter what they do.

The exception to that is when the perfomer just hasn't found what works for them. And that is only found through lots of experience. So get out there, perform and see how and what people respond to. They may love when I do an ambitious card routine. They may hate when you do the exact same one.

I would personally choose cards over coins, but not necessarily because I think cards are better, because I don't. Cards are just my personal preference.

And as others have said, it's not all about the medium with which you perfom, it's more about the outcome of the trick and the effect it has over your audience. You could do a trick with a bus ticket, and it could be better than one with a deck of cards, all depending on the performers imagination and skill.

Try your hand at both, doing block sessions with each, that's what I have been doing. I've got quite a few books on cards, and that is the area in which I hope to become good at, and specialize in, but I've only got one book on coins(J.B.Bobo's), but I'm told that for what I'm after, that modern coin magic is the only book I'll ever need, as all the basics are contained within it.

I've also got two books on mentalism....Annemann and Corinda. And it's my hope that I can find my own style by blending all 3 together, but with a special emphasis on cards.

Look at Dynamo, for example, I think he's got a brilliant style. He looks unassuming and just like a normal guy, but yet his magic is second to none and he blends the 3 areas of card, coin and mentalism really well, in my opinion.

Try a each one and see what works for you, and if you like both, then try to learn both.
