I would personally choose cards over coins, but not necessarily because I think cards are better, because I don't. Cards are just my personal preference.
And as others have said, it's not all about the medium with which you perfom, it's more about the outcome of the trick and the effect it has over your audience. You could do a trick with a bus ticket, and it could be better than one with a deck of cards, all depending on the performers imagination and skill.
Try your hand at both, doing block sessions with each, that's what I have been doing. I've got quite a few books on cards, and that is the area in which I hope to become good at, and specialize in, but I've only got one book on coins(J.B.Bobo's), but I'm told that for what I'm after, that modern coin magic is the only book I'll ever need, as all the basics are contained within it.
I've also got two books on mentalism....Annemann and Corinda. And it's my hope that I can find my own style by blending all 3 together, but with a special emphasis on cards.
Look at Dynamo, for example, I think he's got a brilliant style. He looks unassuming and just like a normal guy, but yet his magic is second to none and he blends the 3 areas of card, coin and mentalism really well, in my opinion.
Try a each one and see what works for you, and if you like both, then try to learn both.
