Blackpool Magic Convention Movie

Postby johnharrower » Apr 5th, '12, 15:53

"The Conjurors Convention" is a reality-based film that follows several magicians at and around Blackpool Magic Convention 2012. The movie focuses on the social side of the convention and features numerous performances from magicians including Liam Montier, Tom Crosbie, Dirk Losander, Skizzo, Matthew Garrett and many others. You might even find yourself in the film somewhere!

You can watch the film online at:

I'm looking forward to seeing this.
I've crept my way into a couple of other video blogs (juggling rather than doing magic! ) so i'll be on the lookout.

Any contact juggling in it?

There is no contact juggling but there is a guy who juggles with flaming batons that appears near the beginning. I guess contact juggling is now on my "to do" list for the sequel! What's the film you appear in?

Just watched this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uoOBR2-VPc. As I started watching I clean forgot to look out for a guy in an awesome shirt but hey you stuck out like a sore thumb! Brilliant! :D

I noticed the guy at the start of the video says that "they won't allow camcorders" in there. In my movie there's footage in both dealers halls, in the cafe and in the bar. I presumed that that they wouldn't allow recording in lectures but I had my camera with me at all times and recorded lots of footage inside the convention. Nobody seemed to care and nobody pulled me up about it.

Technically you're not supposed to have any kind of recording equipment anywhere in the Winter Gardens but like you say, nobody seems to care if you start shooting in the bar; everyone has a camera on their phone these days anyway so it's stupidly difficult to police without just outright banning phones, which would never happen.

Though on the other end of the scale if you got a full on camera and boom mic out during a lecture I imagine people would assume you're official and leave you be.

Yeah very true. I noticed a few people recording inside the winter gardens and they were were all using mobile phones or pocket cameras. Nobody seemed to bother.

I've made many blogging films with pocket cameras before but the results have always been fairly typical of a blogging film - average at best. Whilst they are cheap, cheerful and convenient, they have always let me down in the past when recording in pubs. I've never found one that handled low-light and noisy conditions very well. The camera I used for the movie is a chunky beast but sacrificing convenience for quality worked wonders. "The Conjurors Convention" turned out to be the first blogging film that I've made (or even seen) where the video and audio quality is consistently great, even in lower-light places like The Ruskin and in some of the other pubs that I visited.

I was thinking about doing a sequel but the original will be hard to beat as I just seemed to be in the right place, at the right time and with the right recording equipment. Are there any better conventions in the UK than Blackpool? I've not been to any others.

No.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is not a proper 'performing in the real world' magician
