Usually "a 10" is best isn't it? So would "dressing to the nines" be the same as not quite putting in all the effort you could do?

Alternatively I could wear a shirt made of the nine of clubs with 6 of diamond and 7 of heart cuffs.

Talking of wearing tuxes outdoors, I heard a man interviewed who had cycled across the Sahara. He said that the most useful item he brought was his tux. Whenever he met a Toureg camp he would stop and change into the tux and enter the camp or oasis in style. The Toureg appreciated that he was showing them respect, and they treated him royally.

Just back from watching Paul Daniels, and he was impeccably turned out. Perhaps this attention to every detail is why he is the star he is.

He didn't have his shirt untucked and rips in his trousers?

I went and looked, seems there are a lot of ideas as to where this, saying comes from but no one can pin point which one is right?

No. But there was a rip in his finger that looked a bit out of place.

Perhaps he can make it part of his act and tell jokes about it like Dave Allen used to.

In 'The Stage' newspaper, this week is a short article by 2 young magicians who say they did not want to dress like the average magician in ill fitting dinner jacket, bow tie etc. etc.
They present themselves as Time Travellers, dressed in Victorian outfits and match up their magic accordingly

THE GOLDEN RULES for magicians --must surely be:

1. Dress for the venue and the clients that are there
2. Dress should be neat NOT untidy, UNLESS you are playing a character who is untidy

3. Apply 1 & 2 to your hair, nails, teeth, general body smells!- & adapt these 'rules' to your props, your patter and your approach to any audience.

4. And unless you are, again, playing a character-- and have the talent--NEVER embarrass any member of your audience.
Some hecklers might have to be--BUT only if you are skilful & experienced enough to do this

makes me laugh. they don't dress like Time travelers.. they dress like old time magicians. And the magic.. not that victorian. But hey ho. They have an image, and stick to it.
In fact, they are coming to my Village Hall in October.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

Old time magicians, IN THE PUBLIC's EYE, are Victorian Dale.
And you should not laugh at 2 young magicians who are trying to breakaway from the boring, so called traditional magicians' outfits & style.
They may have gone to the Past for clothes but they do have an angle on why they often use more modern magic effects.

You have surprised & disappointed me Dale, with your remark--It smacks of the attitude that a number of magicians on Magic Bunny and Talk Magic had to the young, streetwise, Dynamo, when he first appeared on the scene.
And I remember saying several times--WAIT--give the lad a chance--he WILL get somewhere.
Now he may not be, dress wise, presentation wise to every magician's taste but many members of the Public I meet, ALWAYS bring his name up ( 3 such this week) and tell me how incredible he is in their eyes.

I wonder if the amateurs who ran him down are as successful?
