A FIRST for Magicians on Britain's G T 5 May 2012

Postby Allen Tipton » May 6th, '12, 12:04

Well they did it again.
Grouped several Magic Acts together and stopped them in mid trick.

The lad with Modern Art was doing well but he was a bit stiff trying to move like a dancer--which I do not think he was.

The magician with, The Chair Exchange as Sub Trunk but on a chair with the magician tied, covered and quickly was out of the ropes and a girl, suddenly appeared, tied there in hisplace -- He DESERVED a better chance.

The HAIRY monstrosity--should have been buzzed by all the moment he stepped onto the stage.
I am all for comedy in Magic and comedy done in a different way, but he was DREADFUL--belongs in the Post on Magician's Tatty Outfits.
The hairy wig was a cross between a demented St. Trinians pupil and an alien from outer space.
And the young lady assistant, was left with her head in the Head Chopper. He could not have cared less.
WHY will magicians have ladies kneel on the floor in this trick????? It is embarrassing to the lady, possible dangerous to her dress and b****y uncomfortable for her.

Why not do as Kalanag did? have a small fold down/open up little platform so she can just bend a little and kneel on it.
My jack Hughes Head Chopper ( made for the late Frank Baumforth) had such a small platform and the Chopper could be used for a Leg Chopper. as well.
BUT please, any Leg Chopping magicians-- never use volunteer lady for this version,--use your own assistant.
IF you do not have an asssitant-leave the Leg Chopper out of the Act.

FINALLY A FIRST FOR MAGIC.
On came 2 foreign lads.. Different. One bound the other's eyes and mouth with tape.
"The Most Difficult Card Trick In The World''' was the patter line.
SIMON & One of the lady judges were so anxious to Buzz.
David Walliams signed a chosen card. The lady selected a number
The young magician took it back to the stage, folded into 4. The card--vanished
The taped lad named the card
It was supposed to appear at the chosen number but did not
IN GREAT GLEE AND POKER FACED SIMON AND THE LADY BUZZED.--the other 2 waited.
The taped magician tore off the tapes and the chosen, signed card EMERGED from his mouth--verified by DW.

NOW SIMON APOLOGISED & said -- he should NOT have BUZZED. And he liked the trick and it baffled him!!!!!!
3 CHEERS for Magic
3 More cheers for the 2 young magicians--BRYNOLF & LJUNG.

Unfortunately they were not selected for the semi finals--athough several DUD Acts were.
THEY are the ones to MAKE the viewers Vote for the Simon Favourites.

I think it'd be good to walk out on stage in front of Cowell etc. with a Knife-thru-arm and shout "If you buzz I will cut myself! Right, YOU will pick a card and it better be the right one or it's going to get very messy up here!". Is there a K-T-A that will allow you to drop it point down so that it sticks into the stage, I wonder? I want to make Amanda Holden throw up.

I think the problem is also that magicians perform horrendous cliches which have been seen a million times before (head chopper etc) and do themselves no favours by spending the first few minutes of their audition faffing about and posing. The two chaps with the gaffa tape were refreshing as their presentation was engaging and free from the overblown, patronising persona that sadly many magicians think still cuts it today.

Cowell will only allow acts to go through if he can make lots of money from them.
As a magician's agent he is not going to make much money.
As a pop star's agent he could make millions.

Perhaps someone with a really good singing voice, while performing a magic act, might get somewhere.
(Or perhaps a very attractive, sexy, lady magician might have more chance of getting Simon's approval?)

Tony: I believe the duds are the misdirection---They KNOW the Public will NOT vote for them and so swing the votes towards the SC favourites.

Discom. Only if the Lady magician does a striptease as she produces her whatnots!! or Whichevers!
The late June Merlin ( the late Billy McComb's wife) might have stood a chance.

Wouldn't it be wonderful though IF the Public voted for the Duds!!
There would have been a way round it found-you can be sure.

My closest friend ( a pro magician for 20 years) had friends of his (also pros) on BGT, a few years back--and the tales he told me!!!!
No I cannot say what.
They and him are still working--and working well
The SC arm can stretch a long way!

I d'no why people are talking about BGT as if magic never does well. David & Karren did VERY whell on last years. OK, they didnt make it through to the final, but they did get right up to the Semi.
What does confuse me, is that magic does do better in allmost every got tallent across the globe, with the exception of the uk. One answer could simply be the viewing public, who get the vote, dont like it. I am sure that if the public decided to make a magic act their favorite, Cowell would back them 100%. Probably by creating a mega magic show, and advertising the thing.

but that wont happen, until spangled waistcoats, head choppers, and zero presence make a swift exit, and likeability, originality, and stage craft make an entrance.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

The problem with that show is that we don't get to see everything that goes on. I've got two friends who have been on there, a dancer and a magician.

The dancer lasted about 10 seconds before getting buzzed off, she was told she wasn't original enough. The problem there is that she's actually a fantastic dancer and if they'd given heranother 15 seconds she would have broken into her routine which sure would have been something that could have brought the house down.

My other friend, the magician was forced to change his act at the last minute. He wasn't allowed to use his prepared props and couldn't use a judge in the act as had been previously agreed so had to go on stage with a totally improvised act.

I do believe that they will be in the semi finals.

They did the same trick on Penn and Teller: Fool Us, which they ended up fooling them. The presentation/performance was much better on that show. This was probably because they rushed the ending on BGT before the other two buzzed.
On Penn and Teller, when the first reveal was done, everyone laughed. We all knew what to expect. They even did a few other fake reveals and had fun with it.

Lets hope they come out with something great in the semi finals and not worry about the buzzes, just do their thing.

If you're in the UK, you can watch the audition here.

If you live elsewhere in the world, you can watch the audition here.

Oops sorry, I missed that!

So, what did people think of their semi final?

I enjoyed it, a few things going on, and for me, an unexpected ending. Hope they go through so I can see them again.

That was absolutely fantastic. I hope the public vote for them - I literally can't wait to see what they're doing next. They picked the perfect act for an audience like that.

I hate that all over facebook everyone is saying how they worked it out (how Harry appeared), because they kept rewinding the tv.
But they forget that the viola player appeared, and then the orchestra and it was all based upon a random picking of a dvd.

Only thing I would say is that they could have done the dvd pick blind, and then come back to it at the end. But then maybe that would detract from the appearances, and people would forget that.

Still, great routine.

Well guys--ANOTHER SIMON FIRST tonight.
He clapped Brynolf & Ljung
He said he liked them
He said he had no idea how they did the Predition, the appearances & the transposition
AND
he gave them a solo clap

Tongue in cheek--he did say 'I like magic' BUT with a Big Grin
