a question about a magic I saw

Struggling with an effect? Any tips (without giving too much away!) you'd like to share?

Trying not to come across as a pain in the *rse but I find it a bit worrying that anyone can create an account here and request the name of effects only to bombarded with helpful comments and suggestions.

I think just knowing the name isn't that big a help. I know the name of lots of effects and I know that if I really went out of my way to find out how they are done then I probably could but this website seems pretty good at not letting too much slip out into the open. I read of lots of effects on here and for the most part haven't a clue!

Flood: 'Anyone came come on here?'
Do you include yourself Flood as 'Anyone'?'

How did you come to come, to be on here?

OR should the Moderators have a questionaire for new applicants re :

1. How long have they been in Magic?
2. Do they have a serious interest in Magic?
3. Are they a Performer, a Collector, a Historian
4. Perhaps -- is there anyone who could vouch for their credentials their honesty?

Such a list of interrogations, could go on and on.

As long as Talk Magic Members are
1.Cautious, AT FIRST, about new entrants
2. Are not carrying on, as many talkative magicians will do-- by opening up too deeply, too informative, on material that should be protected

Then that is the best safeguard.

One of the biggest problems in Magic is magicians--and many, many of them, insisting on talking; often revealing, to especially members of the General Public about the methods used in Magic.

With shows I have seen by Paul Daniels & Derren Brown, in the Intervals, I have been near groups of people, in which are, obvious magicians. holding forth--often VERY LOUDLY--
on HOW the performers worked their effects and again very often
Saying HOW THEY, THEMSELVES do the trick.... 'I do it this way' is one of the most used sentences by magicians--everywhere! Magician's Ego.
I know we are ALL passionate about the Art BUT the less the Public in particular know--the more effective, surprising, mystifying, and hopefully, entertaining our magic will be.
And in the case of PD & DB--I remember members of the lay public standing by the loud voiced magicians--taking it all in.

It's the best safeguard without being over the top, Allen, I agree. I think the problem is that you really could not say that this approach was taken in this thread. The original poster has made a grand total of two posts (the second was in this thread too, effectively asking for more information), neither of which indicate any interest in magic beyond wanting an idea of how a particular trick was done.

To be fair to giligen, he or she was (initially) clear about not wanting anything more than a broad idea and that was the question I answered (and honestly too, not one of those joke answers magicians so love giving people who raise similar enquiries in their first posts).

I would not, however, have responded to the second post without seeing more of a contribution from them (there's not even an introduction post). Even then, I'd have stuck within the remit of the original question (is this technique, or gimmickry?).

I think often people on forums are far too off-putting to new joiners. You can be polite and friendly, without giving everything away at the start. It's a bit like dating.

Of course I am not asking you to reveal the magic, but I would like to know if the trick here is based on a high technology feature, or it demands some skills.

Thank you very much
