Back in the days iof The Ideal Home Exhibition in Bingley hall Birmingham, every year there was a guy up in the balcony area who used to sell jokes and tricks including the BirdWarbler, immediately followed by the puffing away on a fake cigarette then demoing things like the African Bones - a sort of Pom-Pom stick effect - a card trick or two (might have been a Svengali deck, can't remember) there would also be a KP peanut can which when opened ejected a spring snake and at some point the fake fried egg, fake sugar cubes and that all time big selling fake dog poo would be introduced. After each demo session the money rolled in like a tidal wave, all the while accompanied by continued bird warbling and Mr Punch from Punch and Judy muttering, 'That's the way to do it'. Ah, the simple pleasures in life...

Nostalgia Mode OFF

Ah yes. That would either have been Fat Fred or less likely Paul Clive of "Card Tricks Without Skill" fame. Paul was the absolute master of the Bird Warbler otherwise known as the Ventrilo. Paul used to go around the country sometimes selling his stuff. However, I think Fat Fred was the more likely candidate since I often used to see him at Bingley Hall where in fact I worked myself. If Mandrake remembers the guy as fat that would be the man. He was very miserable as anyone who sells jokes tends to be. Every single person I have ever known who sells fun is mired in misery.

I worked the Ideal Homes Exhibition in the Bingley Hall many times. Every year they said the hall was going to be pulled down but it never was. For all I know it is still there although I would be astonished if it was.

Sadly Bingley Hall burned down in 1984 whilst hosting the Caravan, Camping & Leisure Exhibition, the site is now occupied by part of the International Convention Centre and Symphony Hall.

Sorry Allen, no Bird Warblers on sale today - just bubble guns, helium balloons and dodgy Olympic 'souvenirs' I asked one of the bubble gun sellers if he knew if anyone was selling Bird Warblers but he couldn't offer any help - he seemed to think I ought to buy a bubble gun regardless!
