PA Systems

Postby Dr Percival RP Pound » Sep 8th, '12, 08:03

I am hopeful that the wise who frequent these boards may be able to help me. Previously I've always been lucky enough to make use of the PA system belonging to the venue at which I'm performing or have manged to borrow a system. I now have a show booked at the end of November and an unable to aquire the loan of a PA system so have made the decision that it may be time to purchase said equipment.

Since taking a virtual stroll through many of the online purveyours of such equipment I find myself very confused as to what specifically I need. Wattage of the amplifier seems to be the primary concern, what wattage would be sufficient for my needs? My upcomming show will be in a small theatre of about 200 capacity and as it's vary rare that I'd perform in anything larger I'd like to ask your recommendations for suitable equipment for such a venue. Many thanks

There are previous threads but, as electronics etc seem to develop almost minute by minute, new info would be gratefully received!

Take a look at these.

I purchased one of these for my cabaret act a few months ago, after speaking to several magicians who had one. These are very lightweight, robust and are compatable with mp3s etc.

I also bought a Galaxy levalier microphone and amp. works a treat for large halls anything up to 180-200 people

I have an AmpCan, which is 15W and more than enough for that size of room. They are hard to come by these days, but the small Cube is another option. After that, you could try a Crate, which are more hefty but do a good job.

Also, you need to consider the type of amplification you will need for the show; do you just have voice, or do you play music through it as well? Make sure that the amp you get has the correct inputs.

If you are not envisioning using it too often, or working larger rooms, you probably don't need to get something with all the bells and whistles.

After many cheap systems I'm now using the above with a headset mic, I use the handheld as well when needed, but you can't use both at the same time.

You will find most 16 channel UHF mics will work with this on a few channels at least. I have a KAM set and a w-Audio and both work with this

90w sound is good for village halls etc and it has a built in battery as well if you are off mains. For voice the battery will last a good while, but playing music loud cuts it down to 1.5-2 hours depending on the volume.

It's expensive but I've spent much more all together on cheaper systems over the years and finally ended up buying this anyway!

I have just bought the Stagepas 300 which I can assure you, is an impressive bit of kit. It's basically two speakers with a mixing desk. Very pleased with the rich sound quality and it would easily allow you to perform in a room of 250 - 300 people. May be pushing it beyond that, but you can get the next model up if you're playing bigger venues. It's straightforward to use, lightweight, compact and you can knock it about a bit. It'll withstand quite alot.

I don't like handheld mic's so I bought the wireless AKG percetion sports set. It's about £220.00 and is so simply to use, easy to wear and again it gives a nice deep, warm, oozing with oil and red wine kind of a sound so you'll be crooning to old ladies before you know it. You have to push the mic a little away from your mouth as it's very sensitive and picks up your breathing. If you don't do this then every time you pause it'll sound like you're giving someone a dirty phonecall.

This is now my PA system of choice. I know someone else who's been using the stagepas for years and swears by it. Having now used it I'm converted.
