I have just bought the Stagepas 300 which I can assure you, is an impressive bit of kit. It's basically two speakers with a mixing desk. Very pleased with the rich sound quality and it would easily allow you to perform in a room of 250 - 300 people. May be pushing it beyond that, but you can get the next model up if you're playing bigger venues. It's straightforward to use, lightweight, compact and you can knock it about a bit. It'll withstand quite alot.
I don't like handheld mic's so I bought the wireless AKG percetion sports set. It's about £220.00 and is so simply to use, easy to wear and again it gives a nice deep, warm, oozing with oil and red wine kind of a sound so you'll be crooning to old ladies before you know it. You have to push the mic a little away from your mouth as it's very sensitive and picks up your breathing. If you don't do this then every time you pause it'll sound like you're giving someone a dirty phonecall.
This is now my PA system of choice. I know someone else who's been using the stagepas for years and swears by it. Having now used it I'm converted.
