Hello again ... and a poll!

Postby Josh Clarke » Dec 15th, '12, 18:13

Wow! I haven't posted here since 2008! Unfortunately, I haven't been practicing or performing magic for the past 4 years. But, the good news is, I'm getting back into it! My aunt was the biggest supporter of my magic and she passed away about 5 years ago. After she passed, I stopped performing because I didn't have my biggest supporter anymore. Recently I've realized that was the wrong path to take. She would want me to keep performing, so that's what I plan to do. Hello again everyone!

For the past 2-3 months I have been perfecting a new illusion. Below is a description:

The magician and the spectator create a group of random items (either physically or in a list). The spectator is asked to touch one of those items. The magician then gives his/her phone to the spectator to hold. The magician tells his/her phone number to the spectator and asks them to call it with their own phone. The spectator sees their incoming call on the magician's phone and is asked to decline it so their call is sent to voicemail. The spectator turns on their speakerphone and, after the normal greeting, the item they chose is announced at the end of the greeting.
This is not an app and it can be done with any phone.

Please vote in the poll above as I am contemplating releasing this effect. I will be filming a video soon.

Thank you!

Sounds similar to iPredict Pro recently discussed on Greg Rostami's penguin live lecture...
Yours sounds different enough, and certainly interesting

I own iPredict+, but I was unaware of iPredict Pro. I searched and found this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ro.android

No offense to Greg Rostami (I think he is an amazing magician and creator), but my effect will not cost $100 and there will be no fee per month/performance. I think I should send him an email before I release this, as a courtesy. Thanks for pointing his effect out to me.

Check Mark Spelman's Chapters DVD, he's got something very similar on there. I don't know your method though so it might be different.

I agree with the lady, it does rather sound like an effect on the chapters. If the method is different, then it should be just as stunning so I am looking forward to the video.

I think I remember this in Chapters. If I remember correctly, I dismissed it as something that would be difficult/a pain to perform regularly - if I'm remembering the method correctly? I like the idea, but it would depend on price, and practicality of performance.

Thanks for the info on Marc Spelmann. I was unaware of his effect. The description of his effect "Free Call" does sound very similar, but I doubt the methods are the same. Anyways, I've sent him an email to discuss the effects. Thanks again for the information.

OK, I've exchanged emails with Marc Spelmann and he agrees that my method is completely different. We even exchanged our effects with each other. All in all it was a great conversation. I now feel more comfortable with moving forward with this effect, but I am still awaiting a reply from Greg Rostami.

Hi Josh,

Your effect sounds great. I'm looking forward to discussing your method.

iPredict Pro is a technology that allows you to have 75 voicemail outs as well as 75 text message replies with only ONE phone number.
Those outs can be activated with ONE motivated touch of the screen as you hand your phone to your spectator.

I have a few questions about the performance you mentioned above.

"The magician and the spectator create a group of random items (either physically or in a list)."
How many items can be on that list?

"The spectator is asked to touch one of those items."
Is this a free choice or is there a force or equivoque?

"The magician tells his/her phone number to the spectator and asks them to call it with their own phone."
Can the magician give out his number BEFORE the selection?

"The spectator turns on their speakerphone and, after the normal greeting, the item they chose is announced at the end of the greeting."
Does the magician hold the spectator's phone as the speakerphone plays back the greeting?

all the best,
Greg Rostami

I haven't pushed it to its limit, so I'm not positive, but as far as I understand, the list can be unlimited.

"The spectator is asked to touch one of those items."
Is this a free choice or is there a force or equivoque?
Depending on which item they touch first, a force or equivoque may be needed. If the magician chooses all the initial items, the spectator's choice is a free one.

"The magician tells his/her phone number to the spectator and asks them to call it with their own phone."
Can the magician give out his number BEFORE the selection?
Yes, there is only one phone number and it can be given out before the selection. I choose not to do this because it makes the "move" easier if the spectator is unaware a phone is going to be used right until the moment it is used.

"The spectator turns on their speakerphone and, after the normal greeting, the item they chose is announced at the end of the greeting."
Does the magician hold the spectator's phone as the speakerphone plays back the greeting?
No, the spectator's phone never leaves the spectator's possession.

all the best,
Greg Rostami

Hello Greg,
I will be giving you a call today to discuss this, but I'll answer your questions here so everyone else can see. (The answers are in your quote above.)
