Brilliant! Devastating Effect!

Postby Robertogee » Jun 25th, '11, 04:44

Love the customizable text messages (I've several for various situations).

You can set this up according to your own style / presentation.

My only fear is that so many will get this app that sooner or later people will start sharing the download with friends who don't respect how special this is, and everybody will have it, and bye-bye "magic!"

That's MY only quibble. I hope Angelo makes a (deserved) fortune off it!

So far, my FAVORITE setup is to steer the conversation around to this psychic I know in California who's really incredible, even though I don't believe in this stuff. Then steer it to, "You want to try him? Name a card."

I DON'T ask them to name a color.

(Yes, "Name a card." First time I tried this, my friend REFUSED to tell me her card / color choices even after she sent the text message. Easy enough to get out of, but still.)

AFTER they've named a card, I pull my iPhone out of my pocket and hand it to them, telling them to turn it on and go down to the text message icon at the bottom. When the passcode screen comes up it's, "Oh, yeah." I reach for the phone, enter my passcode and hand it back. "NOW open the text messages."

I tell them to scroll through the messages till they find one from my psychic friend, and tap on that to open a new message to him. I ask them to mention in their text that they're a friend of mine, so he'll know who it's from, and to ask what card they're thinking of, then Send their message.

Once it's sent, I just reach out for the phone and turn it "off," place it face down, and wait.

"He may not even be there. We'll see."

From there on, it's played as usual. When they have to enter my passcode to see the entire message, it's, "You're not going to steal my phone, are you? You enter it. Here it is." Then I let them punch in the passcode themselves. I never touch the phone.

The KICKER is that, not only does my psychic friend correctly name the card they were thinking of, he also says, "BTW, that <color> you're wearing looks GREAT on you. Remember to tell somebody today that you love them. Thanks for writing."

Sounds like a psychic, New Agey, and telling them the color they have on is DEVASTATING, since it's completely unexpected.

Inevitably they or somebody in the group wants to repeat it. I demur. "No, no. It's not a parlor game. I don't want to bother him. I just wanted you to see what he could do."

When they ask if he does readings, I offer to contact him later to see if he's accepting new clients.

Funny thing. He never does.

I only hope everybody who downloads Magic SMS treats it with the respect it deserves and doesn't turn it into, "You've GOTTA get this app!" with just anybody.

Hi Roberto!

Glad you like the app.

Also thanks for the idea of asking for card and color before introducing the iphone. Never thought of trying like that.

Thanks again mister. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. :D

Thank YOU, Angelo!

This is such a brilliantly thought-out classic effect, Angelo -- and for the iPhone, yet!

It's in their hands at all times. It's electronic. It's on-off. It's familiar to them. They know how it works. I can't POSSIBLY be doing anything, much as they want to believe I am.

Your customization options allow for infinite personalized presentations.

A couple of other approaches I've found.

I was just at a two-day lake party. I presented Magic SMS as I've outlined, on the first night. ONCE.

Everybody kept wanting to repeat it and I just politely begged off with the, "I don't want to bother him [the psychic] again. I just wanted you to see what he can do. It's not a parlor trick. I can't believe it either."

The second night, they wanted to try it again. So I "reluctantly" agreed to see if my psychic friend would reply to somebody's "thought of" card. (NO MENTION OF A COLOR.)

Thanks to your suggestion about storing the psychic's SMS replies in Notes, then copying and pasting them as wanted, for variations, etc., I worked out another angle.

Your method is clear enough to allow the psychic to let my friend unexpectedly tell them what color they're wearing, in addition to correctly naming their thought-of card.

But I also wanted to be able to cover a situation where somebody was wearing PLAID. Especially if I were repeating Magic SMS a second night before the same group.

I constructed a new SMS reply from the psychic and stored it in Notes beforehand.

Early in the evening, I determined who my subject would be. She was wearing PLAID. I excused myself into the loo, set up the "PLAID" reply, and that was that. Much later in the evening, after much begging . . .

People were still talking about this from the night before. But I kept "reluctantly" putting them off.

"You had the iPhone camera on, somehow, so he could see what color I had on," they said. Or, "You had voice recognition on, somehow." They really were intrigued and determined to try contacting my psychic friend again to test him.

I finally asked my pre-selected "plaid-wearing" subject to name a card, (NO COLOR) then took out my iPhone, handed it to her and asked her to turn it on.

When she got the Passcode screen, I'd anticipated that somebody might remember it from the previous evening, and sure enough: the previous evening's subject shouted it out.

"You're right. But I changed it before I went to bed last night. I'm paranoid about security. I change it once a week anyway." Took the iPhone back, entered my real Passcode, handed it back and proceeded.

When it came time for my plaid-wearing subject to enter the Passcode to read the entire SMS message, I just laughed. "Oh, go ahead. I'm going to change it later anyway. Here it is. See if he's right again."

Now, almost everybody there had seen Magic SMS the previous evening. So they would remember the text message.

This time? Completely different message. My psychic friend still named the card correctly.

But he again blew everybody away with his final comment: "BTW, plaid?"

Simple. Killer.

I NEVER present this more than once per setting. I'm ALWAYS "reluctant" to bother my psychic friend. It's NOT a "trick."

Next? Thanks to your customization feature, my psychic friend can not only correctly name their card / color, but add a personal comment like, "Enjoy your visit from your daughter next week." Or, "Have fun in New York!"

As long as you have some "private" time to set up the message, and give plenty of time between the setup and the later presentation, and know something about your subject, the possibilities are endless.

For me, anyway, the variations are the kickers. I always say that concentrating on the card / color gives my psychic friend something concrete to concentrate on. A psychic gateway.

From then on, with personalized comments, the sky's the limit!

Even people who may have seen it before are still bewildered by the ever-changing SMS texts and personal psychic comments.

Simply the best mentalist effect ever devised, as far as I'm concerned.

Mind Blower!

Postby Robertogee » Jul 20th, '11, 11:27

The combination of the card / color thing plus the ability to customize the text message is what makes this unbeatable, for me.

This weekend, at a lakeside party for a guest visiting the States from Brazil, and as I outlined above, I simply had her name a card (no color) before pulling out my iPhone to "try" to reach my psychic friend. Handed it to her and proceeded from there.

Twenty people witnessed this.

My psychic friend replied (after 90 seconds) with something like, "I'm concentrating on the card you're thinking of, but are you near a lake? Is your name Martha or Marta?"

Her name was Marta.

"I was just in Rio last year. One of my favorite places."

"Are you wearing blue by any chance?"

"There is good news about the job or financial question you are currently involved in."

Turned out she was indeed involved in a pending job-change situation. But that's a general enough question that could apply to almost anybody.

"By the way, the card I keep seeing in your mind is the Three of Clubs."

"One Mind, One Heart, One World."

Signed, my psychic friend. (Xavier, in my case.)

I act as delighted and bewildered as everybody else. People read and re-read the text message and talked about this for ten minutes.

One caveat.

Since I have my Calendar icon with the date visible in the upper left corner of my iPhone home screen, it's essential to take a screen-shot of the current day's home screen, and set it up beforehand, along with the appropriate text message.

I like to present this "straight," as above. But that's just my style.

Now that my psychic friend is beginning to be talked about, the psychological factor of "reluctance" is crucial to its effectiveness when people bring it up and want to try it. (That, plus only ONCE per setting.)

It doesn't get any better than THIS!

Okay. I'll Stop Now.

But do you see how DEVASTATING this effect can be?

Tonight, my "psychic friend" Xavier texted back, in front of a group of ten or more:

"I'm concentrating on your card. But first let me ask you. Are you engaged to somebody named Katy? Brunette? Is she there? Is she wearing white? Are you in real estate? I see a big commercial deal you're involved in. Lots of competition. Persistence pays. Promise the best interest rate on the loan. Then deliver.

"The card I keep seeing in your mind is the Ace of Spades."

When you know some facts beforehand, you can set up the text reply accordingly.

Then use your favorite "force" to choose your subject.

The easiest, I've found, is to get somebody in a one-on-one conversation, steer the talk around to my psychic iPhone friend, then invite others to watch.

The second easiest, now that people have heard about my psychic friend and beg, "Me! Me!" is the old, "Name a number between one and twenty."

I pick the number closest to my pre-selected subject's chosen number and hand my iPhone to them.

I like to follow-up with a text back to my psychic friend, thanking him and telling him how accurate he was.

This is killer.

I very much agree that whilst this thread did originally have a certain R&D purpose, it is now too close to a freebie promotion and therefore not in accord with TM rules. Now edited somewhat.
