Making Money from Magic

Postby Alan Jackson » Jun 29th, '05, 10:44

I recently bought “Making Money from Magic”, a new book written by professional Scottish mentalist Drew McAdam and published by Ian Rowland. It is available only from Ian Rowland’s website. If you want to read more about it, see:
www.ianrowland.com > For Magicians Only > Items To Buy
The book costs £20 + postage anywhere in the world. It does not teach tricks: if you have no intention of getting paid for performing then the book is not for you. If you are a full-time professional then you may or may not find it useful: I can’t tell because I’m not one (it’s for others to make this assessment). However if you are a competent amateur who would like to earn a living from magic, or intend to carry on with your day job while turning your hobby into a lucrative sideline, then you have to have this book. It will be the best magic-related investment you have ever made. There’s no miracle formula or anything weird, just down-to-earth practical advice which could take many years to discover by trial and error (with a lot of expensive mistakes along the way). This is the kind of quirky publication which could sell out and become an expensive eBay item. If (like the title says) you want to make money from magic then buy this book: you won’t be disappointed.

Book

Interesting that there was no reponse...

I bought the book, and quite like it, but personally don't think it worthy of the adoration it has picked up on another forum.

Just my view. A nice book, lots of common sense, and some good suggestions too. The journalistic style of writing didn't really appeal, but worth a flick...

Piers.

I too have heard great things about this book, and as it is written more from a mentailsts stand point - is one I will probably buy at some point.

That also is a fair comment and shows how careful we have to be when reading online reviews, however I still feel this book may be useful for me. Thanks though for the feedback.

Ouch! First piece of negative reviewing I’ve met with so far. “Adoration...” Geez, do you REALLY think so?

As for the “journalistic style”. Piers, do you think this could possibly be because I AM a journalist? My writing is simple, because I AM simple! I like to get the message over in as few words as possible. If you prefer hyperbole and embellishment, then I can provide you with exactly the writing style you require. However, Tautism is the style in which I write because I believe in getting the message over in as few words as possible. When writing, I had no wish to churn out an academic reference work. I think readers appreciate that.

It’s not literature – it’s copywriting. (See, grammatically, that wasn’t a sentence – no verb - but it works!)

Anyway, Piers, I’ve just read this over and it comes across as supercilious and a little bit nasty. I DO hope you don’t take it that way. I’m trying to be funny in my own Scottish way. :D

Thank you for your comments, and I do hope you get something out the manual. It’s not “worth a flick”, as I hope you appreciate, it has to be worked through, exercise by task, by exercise.

Very best wishes, and kisses on the bottom

Drew,

No problem, all healthy comment.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm not aware of any other book like this, so there is certainly a need ...

And yes, I *definitely* got something out of your book.

Now - just let me get my bottom ready.
( Or have I mis-understood, and you meant your bottom ?! )
( It’ll be a pleasure either way … )

Best,

Piers.
