Hello and welcome to TM!

Just to start a controversy on your first day here, I'd say that magic and camera tricks are very similar. Magic is deception, right? (Unless you believe in real magic, which is another matter...:D) (Hopefully), nobody agonizes over doing a DL because it's deception. As was in another recent thread, we "entertain people by fooling them". Camera tricks are just another form of deception...

For example, I love Derren Brown's show Trick of the Mind. I think he's a genius and a born performer. However, I also know that he frequently uses off-camera work (e.g. asks someone to write down their chosen number but doesn't show that on camera). Therefore, do I call his show rubbish? No, I think it's great. If a camera trick will produce an entertaining and magical result, by all means go for it.

However, the thing to avoid is when camera tricks remove the entertainment. For example, if you make a video of a card change where there's an obvious cut in the middle, that's not entertaining. The trick is making sure that the end result is magical 8).

I'm rambling now (HELP!!! I'm too young to degenerate into meaningless conglomerates of words elephants monitor sprinkler aaarrrgghh sorry ) so I'll stop before I write anything too inconsistent and incomprehensible.

Kati

I do not quite agree i think David Blaine uses more camer tricks and gimmicks. FOr example when he did the balducci levitation he used camera tricks too look like he was 2 feet off the ground. He also uses the raven and the cigarette through coin tricks, both which can be bought from www.penguinmagic.com

Criss Angel is a little more daring as one can see in his TV special although i feel not everyone will agree with me for some reason. One example is when he does the barrell drop or sets himself on fire.

Both are entertaining tho.
