Making Magic Real – Richard Osterlind
eBook available from Osterlind Mysteries

The Effect
No effects, as such – more like it’ll have a HUGE effect on your performance… here’s the blurb:

Some magic books teach new effects. This one will change the way you perform the ones you already know...forever. In this bold series of essays, Richard Osterlind challenges the status quo and exhorts magicians and mentalists everywhere to believe in their own magic. This book is a call to arms for mystery performers everywhere to rise above methodologies and mechanics and infuse their magic with a new sensibility - one that can dramatically strengthen the impact of their work and leave audiences with a sense of genuine wonder. Making Magic Real will revolutionize the way you think about magic from now on.

Cost
US$10 – which is just under £6 – a bargain

Difficulty
(1=easy to do, 2=No sleights, but not so easy, 3=Some sleights used,
4=Advanced sleights used, 5=Suitable for experienced magicians only)

Going on the rating system used above, it’s a 2 – there’s no sleights, but it isn’t so easy to apply if you’re not prepared to open your mind just a little.

Review
This ebook is outstanding. It’s a little shorter than I first expected, but it really is a case of quality, not quantity. The ebook explores Osterlind’s concept of ‘The Magic State of Mind,’ basically telling you to believe in your own magic; ‘If you believe in your magic, so will others’ is the title of the second part.

Osterlind guides you through accessing the Magic State of Mind, and gives examples of how it works and why it is such a good thing to have.

Osterlind is renowned as a mentalist. However, if you’ve never done mentalism, or have no desire to study mentalism then fear not, the material in this book is applicable to all of us, and will help you, no matter what style of mage you are.

Overall
Looking at my review above, I am quite disappointed as to how much I have written, and feel I have not done justice to the book. This book is absolutely outstanding, and everyone should own it. It will change the way you perform. Ithas changed the way I approach all of my magic, in a similar vein to how Derren Brown’s ‘Absolute Magic’ did.

10/10 – without a doubt.

I will be buying more of his ebooks.

I have this, and "Making Real Magic". I have to agree with Zack's comments. It is a book which is on a par with Absolute Magic. It's performance elements which are covered, and so apply to mentalist and magi alike.

I give it 10/10 too!
