Well all this talk about finding good tricks for free on the net is very controversial. It's true that for the greatest magic mysteries you do need to pay money or make them up yourself.
However it's extremely possible to become a superb amateur magician just from free stuff on the net. For example, I learned the invisible palm routine from the internet. A painfully simple routine that to anyone not familiar with the concepts is nothing short of witchcraft. I've had better reactions from this trick than from some of the tricks i've learnt from dvd's, books or downloads that I've paid money for.
If you can gather the skills for free this leaves a good budget for supplies (i.e. lots of decks, close-up mat, etc) rather than paying to learn. Just depends how far you wish to go.
