tips for a talent show?

Postby Zero000 » Sep 19th, '05, 21:19

i have a talent show thats coming not so soon (more like next year, march? ish?) and i really want to do magic. so i dont really know what kinds of tricks should i do in a very large auditorum that fits about 400 people. i cant find a picture now, but i'll try and take some photos before the end of the week.

found a picture, its sorta this big

Do lots of tricks that involve audience participation. People love that. Last, try to use a little humer in your show.

What type of magic do you usually do?

Well... I like to do a little bit of everything. My favorite probably are money tricks. But i think you should do whatever you feal the most comfterable with. For example, i cannot do a card magic trick to save my life. (sadly) Some people like to do different tricks. Also, do tricks that you like.

oh yeah, i think each person has about 5-7 minutes. its also harder now to hide things with dollar tricks (i.e tearing it in half and such), because the audience is not only looking at the spectator, but there must be some of them looking at me

I would like to suggest cointricks...but if the audicene is big you need to have huge coins if you want everyone to see them...:S

NOTE: I know this is a double post - I just wanted to make sure Zero saw this. Hopefully it's helpful
This is a tough order. Unfortunately, it seems more often than not, the larger you go - the more you spend.

There's still some killer stuff, though for decent prices:

Cups and Balls

Full-sized Linking Rings. You can probably use Ninja Rings - but if it's a big stage (Like Zero's) the larger rings are better suited.

Slydini Silks - I would highly recommend picking these up. Penguin Magic offers the best deal ($15) I don't know of the quality, though. Once you have this, I would recommend picking up Bill Malone on the Loose vol 1 for his Slydini silk routine. It's GREAT.

Mandarin Mirror Box - Works great for productions

Sponge Balls - May not be the best for LARGE audiences, but you can't deny how useful these are!

The Zombie - Never used on myself, but it can be cool if performed well.

D'lites

ITR/Levitation work

One that I think is worth it (even if you have to spend some extra cash) would probably be Snowstorm in China. I've never performed it (or learned it) but it's INCREDIBLY impressive. Basically it goes like this:

Performer puts a piece of torn tissue paper in a glass of water. Removing it he squeezes the water from the soggy pieces. Then with a wave of a chinese fan - suddenly the ENTIRE area is covered with a massive "snowstorm". I don't know how difficult this is to perform - but I think this would SLAY your audience if you could pull it off.

Spurred by this topic - what are some of the greatest stage effects you've ever seen performed? One of my was Kevin James' Bowl-a-rama effect. I thought it was genius (Unfortunately it cost almost $800 if you want to buy it)

Hope these help. I don't have any stage experience, I'm just going by things I've seen.

I don't really suggest doing coins or money magic because of the size. Card magic is tough but can be a killer.

Personally, if it's a talent contest, I would be doing card flourishes but if you're not into that, then it's probably not your thing. But XCM moves with music is great IMO.

If you're looking... http://www.ronjo.com/Merchant2/merchant ... de=M002127 - $15.00 so may be worth it!

I would agree with whoever said it  in that card tricks or coins would not be a good idea on stage, unless you have a camera and a big screen.

I'd go for some of the classics such as a good cups & balls routine and some cut and restored rope. Like coins, I don;t feel that cards work too well on a stage environment unless they are large cards. Also consider some TT and IT work as everyone will be a good distance away.

What will set you apart is not necessarily the tricks but your presentation of them. Whatever you end up performing, do not overlook the presentation by concentrating too much on the trick itself, if you see what I mean :?

This is a closer from Dan Harlan, yes with cards, but should get you a nice applause at the end.

You have people take cards from a stacked deck, and hide them so you cant see them. Then ask them that if they hear the name of their card called out, they should stand up and applause. Name the first few slowly, and then the last 3 or 4 in quick succession. This should hopefully get you a standing ovation.

Its a nice idea I think.

Hmm I wouldn't go for healed and sealed, it would be in completely the worng context imo, unless you had a stooge to hand you the 'empty can' like halfway through. Or finish one can and place it behind your magic box then just go for it again producing the rigged one? If your into 'drink tricks' then I would go for "Mak Magic's Airborne" at Alakazam I think it looks great... bottom of this page: http://www.alakazam.co.uk/acatalog/General_Magic_28_.html
