Err, think we missing the point here guys - recommending an Xbox 360 over a PSP?

The PSP is for portable gaming - the Xbox isn't. Do you want to play games on the move? That is the key question.

If you do then the PSP rocks - it's hands down the best system out there currently. The screen is the best, the graphics are waaaaay better than a Nintendo DS. Essentially it's a PS2 in your hands. The DS is a modified N64, the PSP a modified PS2. Remember, that's one console generation ahead for the PSP!

Plus, you can hack them and do all sorts of 'stuff' with them, which I won't go into here unless asked!

I think you are still missing the point ... the pure power alone doesnt make the PSP better than the DS ... from my experience the games on the PSP simply dont work as a portable format,

The last portable device i dought was a Compaq Ipaq pocket PC ...plenty of good software on that and you can use if in a much more versitile manor than the PSP.

Although for pure mobile gaming nintendo still make the best console by a long shot.

Care to expand what you mean how the 'PSP games don't work as a portable format' in more detail?

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, because I've had great fun playing Burnout, Virtua Tennis, Lumines, Mercury etc. And so have my buddies - everybody wants to play on it once they see it in action.

You're comparing a PDA to a portable gaming console?! You think that is a fair comparison?!

SirRawlins wrote:Although for pure mobile gaming nintendo still make the best console by a long shot.

Nope, not in my opinion, I had a DS and sold it, games were just not upto it. I liked Mario - that's it. Didn't have enough of the games I wanted to play - plus the graphics and screen are inferior to the PSP - fact!

Of course i can ... what you need to think about is most of these games were designed with a big-screen in mind. Also, the power of the graphics processsor is NOT the same as in its bigger brother. so for instants you have the following complications.

Burnout - The poor refresh rate and draw distance means that you can be traveling along the track/road and suddenly be struck by obstacles (like busses) which were not there a split second ago.

Several large games industry critics have picked up on this.

TheMightyNubbin wrote:I think we'll have to agree to disagree, because I've had great fun playing Burnout, Virtua Tennis, Lumines, Mercury etc. And so have my buddies - everybody wants to play on it once they see it in action.

We could agree to disagree, everyone i know that has bought and played and PSP never wants to play it again.

Yes, i think thats more than fair.

Then you are a fool..lol

I'll agree that it is FACT ... but, hardware capabilities is not what makes a console better than one another, there is so much more too it ... unfortunatly sony are going to learn that the hard way.

Again, there are lots of technical manufacturing faults with the PSP buttons and things like that ... I'm just going to sit back and watch it breed arthritis.

I think sony are more then 'technicaly" capable of producing a system that matches and even exeeds the processing power of the X360 ... howvere thats where they stop, Microsoft with thier onlines gaming system and massive "community" element amougst users will dominate the future markets.

also .. the PS3 looks like a bread bin.

I'm with SirRawlings on the Sony issue.

As a consumer I;ve bought loads of Sony gear over the years from a Vaio laptop, DVD home cinema, widescreen TV, digital camera etc. etc.

I always thought it worth paying that bit extra for a good brand but I wouldn't now touch another Sony product. I've had a couple of problems with one or two items and their customer care is about the worst that I've come across. They contract out some of their support and they won't event talk to you without you parting with £25 upwards before telling you that they can't help.

Sony used to be good but now others have not only caught up but in some areas they've overtaken.

mmm that bread bin and grill look mighty good on my tv :D

anywhoo. sony has better and more licenses with gaming comapnies, i remember i didnt get the xbox just because of that reason. such as sony enix and alot of other companies, the xbox only had halo which was fun (now i got it for pc). i have to agree that xbox live is getting quite popular, i think thats the only thing that xbox can succeed at.

oh yeah, sirrawlins, have you seen the ps3 controller?

?!~

For crying out loud, the msn button under my name is to talk about magic with me, NOT A FREE MAGIC GIVEAWAY LINK. dont abuse it

They may have a greater number of licenced game developers than microsoft, however this was only true for the first generation.

When it comes the this latest generation Microsoft have developed tools and support packages for all their developers, the most impressive of these is XNA, this means that making impressive and complex games much more simple, much quicker, much cheaper.

When you discuss the issue with developers all have praised Microsoft, however, sony linked developers have had several issues witht he support and contact they recieve from Sony.

The lead developer of KILL ZONE was recorded on camera slating sony, complaining that the standards they had demonstated to people at E3 were not realisticly achievable on this generation of console, and they were not recieving the information they needed from Sony to progress their development.

Further more, with this latest generation, to ensure consistent quality Microsoft have set a list of basic features ALL games must meet, such as:

All games MUST be high definitiion,
All games MUST be surround sound
All games MUST be XBOX Live compatible
All games MUST support anti-aliasing
etc
etc

This will ensure an extreamly high level of quality, tie this into the added features of the new blade based xbox dashboard which is now available in-game at the touch of a button.

Couldn't agree more, customer support is SO important, and yet so many cimpanies seem to be getting worse and worse at it, Sony are one of the key offenders, along with DELL and AOL ....

Thanks guys,

Rob

These games scale down nicely when you have the first and biggest WIDE SCREEN ever seen on a portable console. Absolutely no problem at all - the games look and play great.

SirRawlins wrote:Burnout - The poor refresh rate and draw distance means that you can be traveling along the track/road and suddenly be struck by obstacles (like busses) which were not there a split second ago.

This is down to how well the games are programmed NOT a limitation of the PSP. For example, go and play Ridge Racer on the PSP, runs smooth as a baby's *rse - at a full 60 frames per second and no pop up - so you are quite clearly wrong!

SirRawlins wrote:We could agree to disagree, everyone i know that has bought and played and PSP never wants to play it again.

I don't believe you! Give me their numbers and I'll get them committed!

SirRawlins wrote:Yes, i think thats more than fair.

Well I think comparing a device that is designed to store telephone numbers and write little notes with a device that it purely designed for pure graphical processing power to play games is patently ridiculous!

SirRawlins wrote:I'll agree that it is FACT ... but, hardware capabilities is not what makes a console better than one another, there is so much more too it ... unfortunatly sony are going to learn that the hard way.

There's three things that makes a console successfull, the games, the power of the underlying hardware and marketing. Sony wins on all three! Nintendo is an also ran today - a far cry from it's glory days. They just don't have the money to compete now - it's Sony and Microsoft competing from here on it.

As for Sony learning the hard way - wrong again I'm afraid ol's Rawlins  the PSP is creaming the DS in the UK....

"Sony’s new PSP console has sold an estimated 185,000 total market hardware units in its launch week, outdoing Nintendo’s DS (87,000 units at launch) to become the most successful UK console launch ever."

SirRawlins wrote:Again, there are lots of technical manufacturing faults with the PSP buttons and things like that ... I'm just going to sit back and watch it breed arthritis.

*A few* of some of the very first models of the Japanese PSP's had button issues. All fixed long ago.

OK bud, tanks at the ready ... its war time!

Regardless of what cases the issue .. its still exists and in my experience made the game unplayable. Now the title worked on all the grown up systems, so why not on the smaller one? maybe down to the complexity of having to re-code to make it compatible?

OK, ok ... lets forget about games for the moment, lets talk moveis ... alot of money for a movie? does'nt seem to make any sense what so ever, when and where would you find the time to watch a movie while your're mobile enough to need a "portable" it just doesnt work.

The NOT SO MightyNubbin wrote:Well I think comparing a device that is designed to store telephone numbers and write little notes with a device that it purely designed for pure graphical processing power to play games is patently ridiculous!

I think you're unerestimating the abilities of a pocket PC my friend ... check out the latest tech specs for an HP Ipaq or similar price to the PSP, I'm sure you will find the hardware specification is almost identicle, no, infact ... the HP has a reasonable amount more computing power.

With the wide variety of software availble for the pocket pc it is far more versatile than the PSP.

I cant deny the sales figuires for the console are impressive ... but so were those the ferbie, tamagochie, stretch armstrong, pogs, panini stickers and all the other playground fads.

Sales figures dont reflect the quality of somthing,... how many people thought communism was a good idea?

only time will tell which of us is right ... i've got 10quid that says its me!
