Derren Brown And Good Memory

Postby andreasolsson » Feb 19th, '06, 23:37

In "The Heist" Derrem learns them how to remember 20 different words and in what order they are.
And in an episode of "Trick Of The Mind" he learns a guy to count some candy on a table really fast.

Does anyone know if he teaches this anywhere or if it can be learned at any other place?

The one from the heist is in 13 steps to mentalism, and the smarties one, I haven't a clue. I'm sure it's been discussed before.

Harry Loraynes 'How to develop a Super Power memory' will teach you to remember random words, in the correct order, and heaps of other things also. I haven't finished it yet, but the bit I have got through has been quite eye-opening.

Lorayne is definately the way to go.

Learning these skills is attainable by pretty much anyone with patience.

Although, it does help a LOT to have a very active imagination ;)

You can find Lorrayne's books in the local library, I believe, as I discovered recently. But apparently, steer clear of the Lorayne AUDIOBOOK.

There are lots of methods for performing the specific effect mentioned in the Heist. However, you are right that Loci (location-spacial) based memory 'routes' are the easiest to learn.

And for sure, Loci has been around a lot longer than Lorayne ;)

Although, there are so many mnemonic systems which can be used, it's difficult to ascertain which one specifically could be used here.

Bearing in mind (sorry!) that Derren is quite likely to be inferring that he uses one particular method but actually uses something quite different (and why not? He's a very talented magish!), have a look at this for words on the topic from the man himself.

Corinda has the 'amazing memory demonstration', which is well worth looking up. For performance subtelties, I would thoroughly recommend OSterlind's Mind Mysteries Too, where you see it perfromed in a very entertaining way.

In fact, I recommend all of Osterlind's material.

i've not experimented myself yet - but im pretty sure i've sussed out how the smarties thing was done, im going to try it out with m&ms or skittles soon, if it works, i won't let you know how it's done...but all i will say is "simplify your thinking"...

I'm pretty sure you haven't I know how he does it and simplifying things isn't at all true.

Lemme add my recomendation for the osterlind dvd, i don't think this is the exact method used on the heist, but it realllly works well, as for the smarties / buttons thing i don't know i really wanna but i don't this is one of the Derren routines that bugs me the most, i just can't leave it alone, i recommend you put it out of your mind right now before you develop a dangerous obsession:) heh

anyone seen derren brown live?he does a similar thing to the smarties thing with loads of balls but its more impressive. I am afraid I know how its done and it is very clever, not sure where you could learn it but just try some basic memory techniques and you may be able to work it out from there

Does anyone know of any good mentalism tricks then? I've skimmed through the corinda book, and the new lorayne book on mathematical wizardry - maybe i should write a review on that one? - but i was just wondering if anyone had come up with anything themselves they might like to share?

i have read corinda's "amazing memory test" trick, and it doesn't seem to be a trick that would particularly amaze my friends...they already know me as the "memory man" cos my memory has always been fairly decent. His "photographic memory" trick would have a pretty astounding effect, i have to say, though after all this work i have found a much simpler way of astounding people with a memory trick... or at least its presented as a memory trick, anyway.

Have someone pick a card, remember it, and then put it back in the deck. Let them shuffle thoroughly. Then turn around and tell them to take their card out and hide it in their pocket...Then turn around, do a Rainman, and throw the cards on the table in groups of four of five at a time, really concentrating on the cards as you throw them away. Even mumble some of them as you throw them...Then, once you have gone through the deck, announce that there was one card you didn't see...and name their card. As a memory trick, it works better than anything i've ever used before!

Sorry if im rambling, im pretty ill at the moment and running up a fever!

Would like to hear anyone's thoughts on this trick, or on any decent mentalist or "memory" presentation they may want to share...

It's pretty easy to remember 20 random words, you just have to relate them to eachother and see it your mind for just a fraction of a second, then when you think of 1 word you think of the next and the next, for instance:

You have the words: banana, car, newspaper, sausage, pen, tree, watch, tie, television, football

Now imagine a gigantic banana is driving a car along the motorway. Be careful not to picture the words banana and car. You need to see the action you've selected - the huge banana driving the car.

The next item on your list is newspaper. Assuming that you already remember car, you now need to form a ridiculous association in your mind between car and newspaper. For example, you are driving a huge rolled up newspaper instead of a car. Now picture this in your mind.

Sausage is the next item to remember, so you now need to form a ludicrous association between newspaper and sausage. You could picture yourself reading a gigantic sausage which has lots of news printed on it.

Next on the list is pen. Associate it to sausage. See yourself trying to write with a sausage instead of a pen.

The next item is tree. Picture millions of pens growing on a tree instead of leaves.

Watch is the next item on the list. Picture yourself looking at your watch and see that there is a tree growing out of it, with roots curling up your arm.

Tie comes next. See yourself wearing an elongated wristwatch instead of a tie.

The next item to be remembered is television. Picture yourself with a television hanging around your neck instead of a tie.

The final item on the list is football. See a football match where the players are kicking around a television instead of a football.

If you have really tried to see all those pictures, you will now remember the list of ten items in sequence, both forwards and backwards.

Just try it, try thinking of the huge banana, immediately you'll think of the car, then you'll think of yourself riding a newspaper instead of a car, and so on, same applies for doing it backwards, think of a football and immediately you'll think of the television you're watching football on.

This is deeply explained on this site which I just read thoroughly: http://www.vlaardingen.net/~tom/Mainmenu.htm
