Suppose you want to market magic...

Postby blamejoe » Mar 18th, '06, 22:43

Ok, I keep coming up with great ideas for magic. I like to think of myself as an innovator of sorts, and inventor I guess. I really don't know a long history of magic, so I have no way of knowing whether my ideas have ever been created in the past or not, but I was wondering some advice...

suppose you came up with a really neat effect or two? Maybe involving a special prop you designed. I just did this, with a neat idea, involving entering another realm (the illusion.)

Anyway, what would you do? What steps does one take to go from creating an idea (probably) and selling the idea, or marketing it, to the magic community? I don't think I have the resources to produce it myself, though the materials seem cheap enough (the assembly would be problematic, AFAIK). Anyone ever sell an idea?

Some magic producing sites purchasing new ideas from people. Like at Ellusionist. Many of the products they produced lately are based from people who send them ideas.
Also what kind of gimmick do you need?? Joe Porper have a awesome workshop producing best gimmicks & tools for magic community. But I don't know if he's open for new ideas.

Our very own seige is in the process of launching a magic website, NUMS, where he will market effects. AFAIK it will start at the instant download stage and possibly move on to sending gimmicks with the effects.

Most magic shops will take on good ideas pitched to them. Ideally though you would need to visited the person in question (Peter Nardi of Alakazam, Mark Mason of JB Magic etc.) so you can dem. your wares.

I would say though that more often than not an established shop is going to want to buy the complete rights to the effect. Especially if it is by someone currently unknown to the magic world. By this I mean if they like the idea, they will offer a one off payment, and then organise the manufacture and marketting themselves, but also taking all future profits on the item.

There are now other alternatives, as Kati mentioned NUMS is a good one, but there are people doing similar things. For e-books you have the Underground Collectives site, you also could do worse getting in touch with the likes of Liam Montier and Steve Dela, as they have a site selling their own brand of goodies (the ESP bag is an exceptional idea).

Alternatively many are going down the solo route and creating their own website to market themselves. Obviously this way the profits are all yours, however you will have more of a problem getting your product known to the world and consequently sold.

I am in the process of starting a website marketing some magic and mentalism. It is easier than you think, depending on what it is you are trying to sell. Where as most of my products will be audio as they are ideas and tips on psychology and the deeper structures to performing, there are many easy was to sell other products like EBooks. (Though, I personally recommend against ebooks)

But if you want some tips/pointers... let me know.
