Derren Brown

Dunno if anyone reads it, but whilst idly browsing through Maxim today at work I saw a nice little interview with Derren Brown.

Filled with the usual Maxim style humour, and very little about his effects and stuff... but I thought it was a pretty cool read, even if just to see what he's like when he's not on TV.
Apparently he tells people he's the Funday Times editor if they don't know who he is because otherwise they always start asking him to read their mind

More of an Esquire man myself, but I must admit I bought this months maxim after a pal told me that there was a derren interview in it. I am quite a fan of Mr. Brown, and like the way that he answers the questions with his typical kind of humour.

Has anyone bought the new Derren Brown DVD yet? I went to get it on Saturday and its £19.99 in HMV!!! Waited till I got home and bought it of play for £11.99 delivered!

Which one is the new one?
My girlfriend is getting me Trick Of The Mind Series 1 + 2 for my birthday which is about 3 weeks away.

Is it one of those? Or something else?

The new one is Trick of the Mind series 2. Series 3 has just started (episode 2 tonight, 9pm C4). There is also a DVD of his first TV series, Inside Your Mind.

I got mine from Play too. But there was a big scatch on the top of the dvd so I sent it back. Waiting for a new copy.

Which one is it where he does that trick on the London Underground... where he makes the bloke forget which stop he wants?

If there's a Series 1, 2 and a another DVD I might have to look into getting it!

I'm almost certain the underground effect, along with making a taxi driver forget where the London Eye is, is on the 'Inside Your Mind' DVD. I used to own it, but it got left at an ex-girlfriend's house. Never mind.

Tell you what, though; last night's show was a real let down. Just two tricks and neither was exactly groundbreaking.

Sad but true....I hated how underwhelmed I felt!! Also the last effect I found left me a bit cold....he'd already done the prediction of the dream, as far as I'm concerned the effect was finished. To show a decomposing corpse that's supposed to be someone's dead friend's a bit out of character for Mr. Brown methinks! He also didn't make it clear what this was supposed to prove....whether the guy was supposed to believe he was still dreaming or what? I suppose that's what we were supposed to think but again he didn't make this clear or explain the point of it....
Also the athletics effect was a bit unclear too, by the end of it the beginning had become insignificant, (though I like the cheeky line...."....to show that she's always ONE AHEAD"....tongue firmly in cheek!)....

Quite liked the postcard effects though....quite a clever idea....

Tomo, I too feel the same. I want to see more of his technical ability as apposed to these hypnotic stunts. Shame.

Can anyone point me to an online site that sells the dvd's of his shows? I've been looking around, but haven't been able to track it down. I don't get cool British TV here (just the typical crappy load of sitcoms and poorly acted dramas).

Fully agree with all you guys. I actually got bored last night. I hate to say it but I did! I especially found the Kelly Holmes effect very long winded. I did like the postcard effect at the beginning though. Very clever.

trick of the mind

Postby linda » Apr 4th, '06, 15:11

my thoughts are the same -I wasnt really impressed with the dream stunt -couldnt see the point other than probably leaving the indivdual in a disturbed state !!-

Also I thought the postcard trick was a bit basic -clever use of suggestion -I will walk up to you off the street, ask you some questions with a camera crew to hand, put you under pressure -dont you think you would find the UNUSUAL!! .Same with the snow capped mountains effect -
