Simple (short) coin vanish

Postby Steverino » May 13th, '06, 16:42

Here's a little coin vanish I came up with. I'm sure others have had the same idea, with a far better implementation.

Nice :)

I dont know anything about coin wanish, so I think this looks great :) But i guess it is easy to understand where the coin is at the end of the trick tho... But i dont see how you get i there.

That fooled me!. Very good work! You seem to have the technique down. My only advice would be to make the passing of the coin a little more smooth and natural.

I am looking forward to seeing more of your videos.

Good work 8). Only thing I can say is try to fiddle a little less when you do the move -- but that's really a minor thing.

hmm, well no fiddling is needed during the pickup or transfer, I was doing that fairly slowly in order to show the LH empty as the RH takes the coin. The bit with the difficult move is when dealing with the wand... It can be difficult to avoid flashing when doing that. I'll see if I can get it smoother.

I haven't really shown this to anyone yet, so I really don't know how deceptive it is. Also it's fairly angle sensitive although I think I can fix this at the expense of slightly altered handling, and misdirection that wouldn't be as effective on camera.

Hehe, no gimmicks at all, just some sleight of hand :)

It's to do with the way I pick up the coin.

I've messed around with it a bit, and changed the handling slightly to improve the angles. This one is from a different angle.

{edit} oh bother. from that angle it looks like I'm not showing the hand empty properly... how annoying{/edit}

I think your second video was much smoother. That is excellent work!

It is also great that you have listed two videos doing the same vanish but from two different angles. It really sells the illusion!

By the way, did you time the audio in the backround to coincide with your vanish? I think it's a nice touch (whether you planned it or not) it adds a kind of grandeur to the performance.

lol, it looks like I had the eurovision preview thing on telly in the background. I hadn't even realised :) I must remember not to make videos with the mute button on my laptop on.

Yes, it is somewhat fidgetty, and you have to watch your angles, especially if using a very shiny coin like in the first example. The timing is important it seems, as you need to show the hand empty, but not leave it hanging around for too long looking silly.

The move for actually vanishing it is incredibly easy - I actually discovered it when picking up a coin, and I sort of picked it up wrongly (It can be done exactly as when picking up the coin normally, with no wierd moves or fiddling). The moves later on to keep it vanished will need a bit of practice, and are slightly finger busting to do without too much waggling. Also, this is where the angles can really be tricky.

With a bit of work, I suspect that the clumsy looking grab by the right hand could be made to look a bit cleaner and fairer, by taking it with the fingers, rather than the whole hand. I've tried this a few times, and it doesn't look so bad.
