I know how it is done

Postby Miles More Magic » May 23rd, '06, 20:08

As I walked out the door tonight, next doors mother called out, " I know how they get a girl to appear from a box. The magician was bad, so I saw it all!"

She has been trying to find out for ages, watching as many TV or live shows as she can.

Not having seen the act, I can't say if he did it badly or not.

There have been enough discussions about exposure etc, so I wont start another one.

The point is, she only watched BECAUSE she wanted to find out how a certain thing was done.

She doesn't realise that if she watches again, there will be no entertainment value left for her.

Has magic lost out by someone learning a secret?

I reckon it is HER, not magic, that has lost out.

Even as magicians, we tend to be dissapointed once we buy a "must have" effect.
Be honest, who has bought an effect because it sounded good and you wanted to know how it was done?

Most effects that I buy are bought because the performance has impressed me and I want to know how to do it and I suspect that it's the same for most others.

The difference is that we're interested in the knowing for performance sake and have usually paid for the priviledge whereas others, many others want to know for free and begrudge having to pay.

They see a different value in the knowledge, or no value at all once they know. they're only intertested in satisfying their own curiosity where as we, hopefully take our new found knowledge onto a different level.

Mandrake's hand is firmly raised skywards. I’m happy to pay to find out how something is done (until the credit card bill arrives) and even if I see someone doing the same thing in performance I enjoy it all the more and can appreciate not only the effect but the method and processes used to achieve the result. I really enjoy seeing someone doing a very simple and basic effect, possibly with a TT or writer, yet seeing them give a fresh gloss to it by adding a few twists and personalisations to an old idea. True magic!

Yep me too, I'm a bit of a method junkie...though I try and make use of what I get  :D.

Agree totally. Oh, by the way, I hold my hand up to buying things to find them out too.
