Ok - 35 people isn't that bad - you're still able to see them - whereas with a larger audience it's just a sea of faces and you pretty much connect with the first few rows.
I think the first most important thing is being able to connect with your audience. It's you who entertains them - not the effects you do. This means that how you present yourself, how you open your show etc. are all very important. Break the ice - make them feel relaxed. It'll relax you as well. Try not to see it as 'them' and 'you'. Rather see it as something you're sharing with them - a combined experience of magic.
What is it about magic that draws you. Why do you do it? What was your first experience of magic and what made it so special? Share that with them. Let them see that and experience that.
