Tips needed - stage magic

Postby Durto » May 29th, '06, 15:33

Hi there!
I'm about to perform my first magic gig. I've mastered my art, prepared all my effects, planned my routine but I still want to ask to talkmagic's members some tips on "how to perform stage magic". It will be in front of a small audience (about 35), only at the front of me so the angles will be great. I would want tips on how to "present" my magic to such a relatively large audience.
Thanks in advance
(I've been doing a search on the forum for existant general stage magic tips and found quite nothing, apologize if this matter has already been discused!)

You're asking a very broad question..

What about performing stage magic do you want to know?

Lol
I guess my question isn't very clear because I don't really know what to expect for a stage act. I've been doing numbers of small gigs for 5-6 peoples but never in front of 35 persons. What must I expect?

ok thats great but we don't know your routine.
second how do you know a set designed for a small group is going to translate to a 35 strong audience.
we need more details, is your stuff closeup one to one or parlour / stage stuff. :?:

Ok - 35 people isn't that bad - you're still able to see them - whereas with a larger audience it's just a sea of faces and you pretty much connect with the first few rows.

I think the first most important thing is being able to connect with your audience. It's you who entertains them - not the effects you do. This means that how you present yourself, how you open your show etc. are all very important. Break the ice - make them feel relaxed. It'll relax you as well. Try not to see it as 'them' and 'you'. Rather see it as something you're sharing with them - a combined experience of magic.

What is it about magic that draws you. Why do you do it? What was your first experience of magic and what made it so special? Share that with them. Let them see that and experience that.

Hope that helps.

Exactly what I needed ;)!
Thanks taneous
Discodude: My routine mainly consist of stage act, not much close up and no one to one. I do not doubt of my routine so don't worry about it, the only think I need is how to interact with that group

ah li8ght dawneth you do parlour stage like me so you'll be ok.

the only diference between performing infront of 5 or 500 is visibility you can still make the same connection with your audience as you will find that several people will react as one person for egsample in your group of 5 you will have one gigler who you would normaly target your jokes to, instead you will now have a group of 5 /10 /50 etc the effect is the same,
i hope that kind of makes sense to you.

if you have the confidence to do small groups then a larger group is just multiples of your smaller group they will react essentialy the same enmass as a small group so no need to panic just play to them as you would your usual group, if you nhave the confidence to lead they will follow.
