PRESTO PRINTO

Postby dat8962 » May 30th, '06, 21:09

Now I know that those purists amongst you who hate gimmics and gaffs will not appreciate this post but never mind

This is another trick that I recorded over the weekend as a promo for prospective clients / gigs. I've always liked this one and it always goes down well with the punters - entertaining magic!

Enjoy and as always, feedback welcome.

I have a version on that trick but with slightly different "prints" and it is not on bicycle stock. Would you happen to know a supplier that sells it on bicycle stock? I looked a while ago but struggled to remember the name of the trick.

As for your performance, very flowing and well presented. I liked the way you started with a full deck, the version I have done just started with the card you "print" from. Also, the cards actually looked sticky, sort of wet with ink and sticking together. This gave it a very nice feel, like you were having to pull the cards apart.

EDIT: Ok, just realised you named the post the name of the trick and I have found it on bicycle stock. Silly me

Magic is real, just look around you, some of the most amazing things have no reason, no explanation but are very real.

Excellent job, Dave. This has always been a favorite of mine. I can't comment on handling - everything was done perfectly.

AJ82 - This particular version is Daryl's Presto Printo - which you can buy directly from his site (foolerdoolers.com) or pretty much any magic store. It's a popular item, so most places stock it.

Yep, I'm one of them, anyway I liked a lot your video, it's a great job.

Just let me ask a question... why after showing the 9 "blank" cards did you took in your hand the one in the bottom - right corner? only that card... and you showed the "face" of that single card.
That, and the "strange" way you took the card made me think "there's something in the corner of that card"...

anyway, beautiful effect :D

PS: great music too, Satriani's my favourite guitarist 8)

I know what you mean Elf and I pondered about this and decided to go with this as it is in the DVD instruction and Daryl explains the benefit. However, it no doubt loses part of the impact with the patter.

As for the performance - great job! Very smooth.

REALLY liked the first 4 prints - your bending and slow peel after was great. Looked highly realistic.

The Quarter print was good too, but after that for me the trick went down hill. I understand that the trick is supposed to be climaxing, but the whole spinning the card and shaking the spades looked more like a gag than anything. The first 4/5 looked SO realistic, and im sure with that handling you can make them believe that you are ACTUALLY PRINTING CARDS!! But the the last 3 may remind audience members that it is just a trick, although they do have more of a comical element then the first few. If it were up to me id include the quarter print second from last and climax on the 10 printed on the bicycle back (print no. 4) but thats just me.

Great job overall - as i said, smooth handling!

Alex

I really liked it too, it did look like real magic, especially the bit where you smudged that one card. I knew what was coming, but I was still amazed by it. That and when you knock the pips down to the side of the card were my two favourite bits, although it is a great routine and very well performed. If you are using these as commercial videos then I should think that you won't have any problems getting bookings :D.

VERY very nice! Really liked the whole thing, that's one of my favourite effects to watch.

I saw a couple of things that are really only of importance to a magician but I'll put them here anyway so I look like I know what I'm talking about :).

- I like to be a bit less deliberate on Flushtration counts - I find that they're not deceptive enough to be done as a 'move' so I just count normally and flash the card as part of a gesture. It shows the card without drawing attention to the fact that something is funny.

- On the choice of the 10S I would just turn over the deck and spread, taking out the 10 - makes it a bit more obscure :)

The smudging of the 6th card was brilliant - it looked so real!

Great performance of what I always think of as a timeless classic.

Not an easy effect to perform fluidly, but you manage it with ease—pausing just the right amount of time for the visual retention to kick in, then moving on to the 'reveal'

Great stuff ;)

What a great performance!!!
But I agree with the comments on your first blank (your bottom left) card turnover. It was very suspicious and slighttly unnatural.

Nicely done Dat... one of my favourite packet tricks (as recommended to me by Demitri).

I have shown this to some of the younger members of my family, and they always love it. Thought it might be difficult without patter, but you did very well.

This, and Queens Out Of Control, are great little routines. Hooray for packet tricks!

Guys - I've just returned from three days on the road and am catching up on the posts. Thanks to all of you that have taken time to watch and then comment.

There's some really interesting posts from each of you on how you would do it, and also which revelations looked the best. I'll study these carfeully over the weekend and consider where I can change things around.

Queens out of control will be one of the next video's so I'll post that too

Once again, many thanks

Very nice work Dave! I agree with Seige regarding his comment about visual retention; in all your performances that I have had the pleasure of viewing, you display a very good understanding of this quality – you don’t rush it and you don’t over do it. You have very good presentation skills; your movements are gentle and flowing, and I think these attributes are important in a restaurant type of environment, as you wouldn’t come across as intimidating or aggressive to the clientele (which is important considering that you are a giant of a man ) !

Now for the critisism ! There is not much to criticize about your work as usual  but here we go:

Firstly, I totally agree with Katrielex regarding the Flushtration count. I don’t know if it’s just me but I always seem to detect this count from a mile away (though I have heard of someone that uses this as a bit of comical relief at the end of their Ambitious Card routine where they finally display how the trick was accomplished by displaying that the ENTIRE DECK  was made up of the spectators signed card !) So, I personally think you should speed up this count and not put as much emphasis on it. I also prefer doing this count where the first card comes out from the bottom to establish what is happening and I avoid any movement in my thumb.

Secondly, when you lifted up the corner card it seemed a little bit rigid but with patter, as you stated, it would probably take the emphasis off that.

I also think that this trick is one of the very few card tricks that are great for kids! And yes it is a gimmicked trick and most adults would probably know it is, but they would have no idea how you would have pulled it off and it is one where you do end up totally clean!

Overall it was a great performance, it was very enjoyable to watch (as usual) and the video and music (love that Satch!) was very well put together!
