I think much of the confusion may come from the lack of patter. I agree with Dave - the original patter is a bit weak. Also, realize he isn't doing patter (like with his other videos) because these are meant to be promotional items.

With patter - the effect does make more sense. The original patter is mean to lead the spectator to believe that you might have way more than 8 cards (there is a variation included to wind up with 10 cards) As for the extra card - I've found that the discrepancy there isn't dwelled upon, as the three joker revelation hits extremely hard. And the final kicker of the color change is even stronger.

However, I must admit the 9th card was always a bone of contention for me, as well. I've found that it's not a big problem for spectators though.

Although I do own this I have very rarely performed it to people due to the fact that I find my Elmsley count sucks especially with these cards. However when I have performed it at no point has anyone ever mentioned the card discrepency.
I think as magicians we look out for things that a layperson doesn't due to the fact that we are used to watching magic.

I thought the video was very well performed btw and I wish I could do it that well. Nice work!

Yes I too have always wondered about that extra card...but if it's such an issue you could always just hold back the last two as one?

Well thanks for all of the comments to date - even those with the critique  . Some very valid points made.

Whenever I perform this effect I've also never had any spec start a rant about the extra card. In fact, I pause here and make a point of the card numbers when I get to seven on the table and just before I perform the 2 card switch to make it look as if there are three or four. In my patter I say something along the lines that it's a hard trick when even the magician can't keep up. It always (well nearly always) gets a laugh and I look just as confused as the specs before I say "oh well" and go on to turn the jokers.

When they see the Jokers they ALWAYS forget the extra card and by the time that you turn the Queens to show the different coloured backs, then as far as they are concerned it's all normal.

Don't let this part worry you as it has NEVER been a problem.

Dat,

Good handling of the routine mate, really enjoyed watching it.

You can make a Queens Out Of Control packet with better quality cards if you don't stick to Bikes. For instance, the QoH design on Tally's is the same as on Bikes. I have the effect, and as mentioned previously, I found the cards to be of a lower quality than the decks I am used to. EC's are definately easier with Tally's or Bikes.

Elmsley always said that if you are going to reveal cards with different coloured backs, then for a more striking effect, make sure the patterns contrast each other too.

Try it out and see for yourself.

:)

Brilliant. Even without patter, it kept me hooked until the end.

Your Elmsley is nothing to be ashamed of by any means - as someone's already said, there'd be no problem with the layfolk - and that's who we do it for!

I've never seen nor heard of Queens out of Control, and the kicker ending with the Queens' backs was amazing.

I can't wait for more of your rope stuff.

A lesson for a lot of us here, a man who really performs his magic...

Actually Mark - that's a good idea about having contrasting backs as well as having different colours. I'll be looking at some cards to work out which are best.

Thanks for the kind words Zack and glad that you liked the effect. As for the rope, I have a gig tonight and I'm going to see if anyone takes any live video footage of my performance that they're prepared to let me copy.

Just got back from 3 days away on business and now have a 120 mile round trip to make. Nice that I'm getting work further a-field through word of mouth now

Unfortunately no-one had a video camera

However, the gig went extremely well as I worked around the tables to a mostly young audience (they're mostly all young to me these days  ) who were mainly in the mid to late 20's.

This was a referral from a booking that I had about a month ago, again in Basingstoke and what I didn't know until I got there was that the guy who's birthday it was was a magic enthusiast who only does self workers and a few trick decks.

I therefore reverted to tricks that used a full and normal deck with the exception of:

Twisted sisters, Kids Kards, Presto Printo and Stolen cards. I used carefully and every single one of them went down a storm - oh, and of course I used the good old ID.

I did a few coin presentations, a chop cup routine producing a lime and then a lemon (always popular) and of course some rope. You should have seen their faces - to say that their jaws were on the floor is understating it.

Overall, very pleased with tonights performance (and pay) and I did an extra 30 minutes on the house, notching it up to 90 minutes in total.
