People who take drugs are do damn smug about and boastful (just look at some of the responses on this thread).
When someone you knew got caught up in this vile pastime and ended up dying as an overdose as a result, it no longer becomes a credible or 'cool' thing to do.

At the very worst, you die or as the great Frank Zappa said when asked to do an anti-drugs radio ad in the late 60's said:

"Don't take drugs kids or you'll end up like your parents."

Or something along those lines.

It's a fools game and no matter how many rap artistes or Pete Doherty's try to make it so, it'll never be cool to me. It's for people that are unhappy with themselves or their life and they need to take solace in an artificial state to blank out the tedium and sadness of their existence.

i've infact lost two friends to drugs...one to heroin, the other to the booze...that was them..their own life-long problems ultimately manifested into what they saw as an escape, which wasnt an escape at all but their own downfall...very sad indeed i agree...

im just saying that for many people, just because they choose to take a drug, either legal or illegal, it doesnt always mean a slipperly slope...and a word to the wise not to tar everyone with the same brush...

It riles me how it's all becoming so acceptable these days. If you smoke then you're a pariah, but there was talk of providing 'shooting galleries' for herion addicts.
Madness, this government are hell bent on helping people who just don't want to help themself. I'd rather all these smackheads turned to religon as there is a huge gap in their lives that needs filling, at least that won't kill you and make you into a theiving, selfish, arrogant, boastful a*hole.

People that take this stuff are just so cocky about it and boastful then wonder why they get arrested. They see it as a badge to wear to prove how 'cool' they are. If dope was legal half the idiotic teens that smoke it would move to something else as it's the risk factor and the fact it is illegal that makes them do it. They feel like a real gangsta, guy!

And therein lies the rub. Many people see drugs as both a big umbrella of nastiness with no differentiation between different varieties and the circumstances in which they're consumed, and as a type of hobby.

The first area arises primarily from the illegality of certain substances and the automatic moral judgement that is imposed upon users of those substances as a result. If cannabis were legal it would probably be served after dinner in restaurants along with the cigars (well, outside restaurants now but you know what I mean) and parents would take a dull view of their young offspring smoking it but wouldn't necessarily judge their peers if they chose to. Sort of the same situation as cigarettes and alcohol now. The fact that the state says it's bad immediately puts any objector on the moral high ground but doesn't mean that everyone that uses it is a loathsome addict who can't wait for you to leave the room so they can rifle your draws for loose cash.

Secondly, as I pointed out in my previous post the vast majority of people who have used drugs at points in the past and still do so now and again have got the actual experience to form beliefs on. A friend of mine who manages the IT department of a large rental car company would probably put on his CV under other interests 'Reading and playing football' but would be rather bemused if someone suggested that he add 'Ecstacy use' on the grounds that he does it now and again. You wouldn't label him as a Bagel Eater, even though he puts far more of those down his throat than little white tablets with car logos printed on them. There's a wide gulf between the addict cooking up skag in a squat and the ordinary guy out clubbing for his mate's birthday and the spectrum encompasses everything in between. You couldn't logically tar both with the same brush but plenty of people are happy to on the basis that Drugs Are Bad. M'k.

brap brap indeed mr. beard...

never paint another man's world with your own palette...

my final point on it all, then i'll be quiet...

whatever your drug of choice is, if you choose to take it, fine, as long as you're not directly hurting anyone...fine by me...

if however, you're taking or drinking or smoking something cos you dont want to face a problem in your life, well, its all about taking that first hard step and dealing with the problem rather than hiding away...

but, on the whole, moral high grounds are lonely places, both from the view point, and the company...

i would love it if the world ran like this...if everyone took responsibility to look after and love themselves, family and friends, we'd have no angry scared little chav monsters, no raging alkies, no over-rated heroin soaked pop stars and no one getting breathing problems and potentially cancer...

and everyone would be addicted to online forums instead...oh....

I can read this thread and agree with everyone’s point of view we now have a drug culture that is out of control.

However if it’s a friend that you personally want to help the thread is confusing. Its not a Poke at any individual or criticism in anyway.

Personally I would try to find out why the person is taking drugs, often saying “it’s the in thing “ Or “Kool” can be an excuse for coving up trauma they are having or something from the past is coming up. Triggers or reminders may be causing the need to “Get out of it” Or a way of self harming. I don’t really want to say on the board where I get my experiences from however if you PM me I will be happy to tell you providing it’s kept confidential. Oh just for the record I am not an ex addict or alcohol abuser “Womaniser “ Guilty

I hope this helps in some small way.
