fairy tail of new york followed by 'wish I could be home for christmas' (is that what it's called?)

worst ever was cliff and the lords prayer. The words did not even fit the tune

I agree, Cliff's definately going to hell for sins against overcommercialism for putting the lords prayer to the tune of auld langs syne and releasing it at a time when he knew all the old dears would rush out and buy it and put him at number one, Elton John did the same for candle in the wind, he's not much better

RE: fairytale of new york I don't think the word faggot would be considered offensive unless Shane McGowan was gay but as far as I know he's not (I could be wrong) but at the end of the day who cares? I don't think any man who find him attractive unless he had major cosmetic dentistry

I generally hate Christmas pop songs, even "the classics" - they just sound tacky from the off and make me think of horrible cheap tinsel littering the streets, toys manufactured specially for Christmas that will have broken by new year and almost anything for sale in Clinton's cards.

However! I do really enjoy covers of carols by indie bands. Sufjan Stevens' version of O Holy Night, Lauren Laverne's In the Bleak Midwinter, Bright Eyes' God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, brilliant.

Some decent bands have actually written decent Christmas songs, for instance Eels "Everything's Gonna Be Cool This Christmas"... Yo La Tengo, Low, Calexico - all of them have songs that blow the usual bilge out of the water.

P.S. A "you must choose" scenario for you... eternal condemnation for Cliff or for Elton?! I mean, Cliff would lose out on a purely musical basis, but Elton's such a schleaze...

Yep, agree with this one, although its about the loss of christmas innocence and not particularly cheerful.
